Archaeological Field Technician (Columbus, GA) - 8-10 Weeks

Stella LLC anticipates having openings for 8 Archaeological Field Technicians for a Phase III Data Recovery project in Columbus, GA. Work is expected to begin January 11, 2016 and will last up to 10 weeks.

Hiring preference is given to applicants in the Columbus, GA area.

Applicants must have prior fieldwork experience, possess a B.A. in Anthropology, Archaeology, or a closely related field, including an archaeological field school or equivalent experience. They should have field experience identifying and analyzing prehistoric and historic artifacts in the Southeastern United States, including survey, excavation, recording, and soil identification. They must be able to work under supervision and as a part of a team, and be capable of performing the job functions and physical requirements described below. Applicants must be able to pass a drug test, be eligible to obtain clearance for entry into a U.S. Army Installation, and must read and agree to the policies stated in our Employee Manual.

Job Functions:

1.     Identify and record cultural features using standard archaeological survey and excavation methods, tools, and equipment.

2.     Identify artifacts, cultural features, and natural conditions.

3.     Recognize conditions that may require the reevaluation of field methods or the incorporation of additional investigation.

4.     Complete field maps and drawings of test units, profiles, and features.

5.     Photograph excavation units, survey areas, and general field conditions.

6.     Maintain an accurate, consistent, and detailed record of survey and excavation fieldwork.

Physical Requirements:

The typical workday will include the excavation of 1x1m and 1x2m test units, block excavation, and shovel testing. The applicant must be capable of hiking in rugged terrain, carrying up to 40 lbs. of gear, standing or kneeling for long periods of time, lifting and operating sift screens. The applicant must be able to perform these tasks in all types of weather.

Compensation and Per Diem:

The workday will be an average of 8 hours long and be compensated at a rate of $21.69 per hour, which includes $4.27 per hour for health and welfare benefits.

The company will provide lodging for non-local employees, and all employees will receive $35 per day for meals. The company will provide transportation to and from the job site each workday. Due to the temporary nature of these positions, other employment benefits will not be provided.
