Architectural Historian for Fredericksburg, VA or Wilmington, DE

Dovetail Cultural Resource Group (Dovetail) is currently accepting applications for full-time Architectural Historians in either our Fredericksburg, Virginia or Wilmington, Delaware office. Primary responsibilities of this position center on the day-to-day management and performance of small- to medium-scale projects. The ideal candidate should be detail-oriented and well-organized, with strong analytical and communication skills.

Tasks associated with this level of responsibility include:

  • Directing and participating in reconnaissance and intensive architectural surveys in a variety of settings, following guidelines set forth by the relevant agencies;
  • Archival and primary source research, including chain of titles;
  • Preparation of historic contexts, National Register of Historic Places nominations, and cultural resource management reports to company and agency standards;
  • Landscape analysis;
  • Monitoring project budgets;
  • Coordination with co-workers assigned to your project; and
  • On-the-job training of preservation technicians and interns.

Minimum qualifications include:

  • A Bachelor's degree in Historic Preservation, Architectural History, History, or a closely related field and at least three years of hands-on experience dealing with recordation of cultural resources in a professional setting, preferably in a Cultural Resource Management context;
  • Proficiency in identifying and analyzing historic properties, architectural photography, and documentation;
  • Working knowledge of federal and state preservation laws, particularly Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act and Section 4(f) of the Department of Transportation Act;
  • Physical ability to conduct architectural surveys in myriad settings, including rural areas;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access; and
  • Willingness to travel (per diem and lodging will be provided on projects more than approximately 90 miles from the office).

Preference will go to candidates who have experience with mid-Atlantic State Historic Preservation Office procedures. A Master's degree and experience in CAD or GIS are preferred, though not required.
