Yosemite National Park Volunteer Opportunity (Monitoring)

The Yosemite Archeology Office is currently seeking 3 - 6 volunteer archaeological technicians for a small-scale construction project in Yosemite Valley from April 18 through May. Volunteers will gain unique experience in archaeological methods and artifact identification. Applicants MUST have experience in archaeological excavation and will not be considered without demonstrated experience. Volunteers will use a standing screen to sort through excavated sediments at a rapid pace. Volunteers will identify, sort, and collect historic and prehistoric artifacts. This position will be outdoors during the capricious spring months, so the volunteer must have appropriate clothing to work in changing weather (i.e., anywhere from hot sun to cool and rainy).

Applicants must be able to:
Identify historic and prehistoric artifact types
Identify faunal remains (required)
Lift 40 lbs. repeatedly
Screen dirt relentlessly
Stand for long periods of time on hard surfaces in cold weather
Work with tribal field monitors in a respectful manner
Follow directions and communicate effectively and discretely
Be on time

Steel- or composite-toe boots are required

Work Schedule:  Monday – Thursday, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm

Due to time and budgetary constraints, sick leave or other time-off requests will not be approved following the applicant’s commitment to the project. 

Reimbursement: The park will provide free housing and utilities. We also welcome applicants from the local commuting areas who have their own housing. Costs may be reimbursed for up to $10/day depending on length of commitment to the project. Travel to and from Yosemite will not be reimbursed.
