Archaeologist Position (Fort campbell, KY)

Job Title: Archaeologist

Location: Fort Campbell, KY

Preferred Start: May 2016

Job Description: Provide cultural resource support to the Directorate of Public Works including GIS and Access database management, site monitoring, land management, technical and content review of externally contracted reports, interdivisional coordination to facilitate undertakings, and public outreach events. Main job responsibilities will include maintaining the Fort Campbell cultural resources geodatabase and using GIS to facilitate review of projects and military training for environmental compliance. Job duties may include various management functions relating to collection, interpretation, recording, dissemination, and reporting of environmental data necessary to execute and sustain installation OMA, MCA and MILCOM construction initiatives in order to meet requirements of NHPA.  The candidate will be required to coordinate field work performed by outside cultural resource contractors working on the installation.  The candidate will also be required to perform field work independently as needed to meet compliance requirements for small projects and training on the installation.  Examples of job activities include:

  1. Assessing and integrating GIS deliverables from outside contracting firms.
  2. Documenting undertakings on the installation for effects to historic properties including NRHP eligible archaeological sites, contributing resources to the Clarksville Base Historic District, and historic cemeteries.
  3. Working with soldiers, Range Division and other programs to ensure that training or projects meet all environmental compliance requirements.
  4. Annually monitoring all historic cemeteries on the installation to assess potential damages or changes.
  5. Developing Section 110 and Section 106 compliance documentation for the Tennessee and Kentucky State Historic Preservation Offices.
  6. Conducting shovel testing in areas that have not been surveyed to allow for military training to take place and documenting findings.
  7. Curation of artifacts collected during in-house fieldwork assignments.

 

Education Requirements: Master’s degree in Anthropology, Archeology and a minimum of 3 years experience (and/or RPA certified). Applicant must meet the Secretary of the Interior’s standards for Archaeology (48 FR 44738- 44739).  Specialized training in GIS and GPS applications required.  Knowledge of the archaeology of the Southeast United States preferred.

Additional Requirements:

  1. Functional knowledge of desktop computer systems, Windows-based operating systems, Microsoft Office software applications, ArcGIS Suite, Trimble (GPS) and Adobe Products.
  2. Candidate will be required to perform field work independently and shall be comfortable with navigating to remote locations on Fort Campbell and completing fieldwork in outdoor conditions.
  3. Must be able to obtain a government security clearance and hold a valid driver’s license.
  4. Knowledge of Section 110 and Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) and how to implement Section 106.

 

Preferred Skills:

  1. Prior experience with archaeological survey in the Southeastern US (Tennessee and/or Kentucky).
  2. Knowledge of lithic analytical techniques and the prehistoric archaeology of the Southeast US.
  3. Prior experience working on federally owned property.
  4. Knowledge with the Army’s NEPA Policy, 36 CFR 800, and AR 200-1; Fort Campbell SIMS NEPA Procedure
