Field technicians for Midwest/Great Lakes work

Location:  Minnesota, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa

Salary Range:  $15-17.00/hr. with $40/day per diem minimum depending on project location

Type (Regular or Temporary): Temporary
HDR is in need of archaeological field technicians for work in Minnesota and the surrounding Great Lakes region, including Illinois and Indiana.  We currently have several projects booked for spring and summer.

Responsibilities: Archaeological Field Technicians are responsible for conducting shovel testing, pedestrian survey, and site documentation, which includes feature and artifact identification and analyses; site descriptions; photographs; and mapping.  Archaeological field technicians are required to perform the following tasks in the field:

  • Excavate up to 15 shovel tests a day
  • Walk up to 6 miles a day
  • Identify historic and prehistoric artifacts correctly
  • Conduct archaeological survey and testing
  • Complete site sketch maps
  • Complete field forms accurately and concisely
  • Use Trimble GPS units and iPads for digital field recording of surface deposits
  • Photograph resources

Qualifications:  Qualified candidates should possess, at minimum, a bachelor's degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a related field and have completed an accredited archaeological field school. Candidates must have experience identifying and recording prehistoric and historic resources in the Midwest, northern Plains, and/or Great Lakes regions. Candidates must also have a minimum of 6 months of field experience (e.g., survey, testing, and data recovery). Candidates must be able to perform physically demanding tasks in adverse environmental conditions (e.g., rugged terrain, remote locations, hot and cold temperatures). Candidates should also have good organizational skills, a positive attitude, strong work ethic, and willingness to learn and execute new tasks.
