Title: Archaeological Field Technician/Monitor

Employment Status: Part to Full Time

Travel: Required for some projects; use of reliable personal vehicle

Compensation: Will be commensurate with experience. Relocation, lodging, and per diem expenses will not be reimbursed for projects in the Los Angeles Metropolitan Area, but may be reimbursed on a project-specific basis outside the LA area.

SUMMARY

Resource Sciences and Planning, LLC (RSP) provides environmental compliance and consulting services throughout California for many types of earth moving projects, including transportation, land development, energy, and water. Our services include cultural resource surveys, construction monitoring, cultural resource management, compliance documentation, environmental impact reports, CEQA/NEPA documents, impact mitigation plans (development and implementation), third-party review, environmental awareness training programs, GIS and mapping. RSP is looking for archaeological monitors/technicians to assist in these tasks.


LOCATIONS AND HOURS

The work location for this position is the Greater Los Angeles area, particularly in urban settings with both prehistoric and historical archaeological potential. We are looking to hire qualified archaeologists who are local to the Los Angeles area, as RSP is not able to reimburse for relocation expenses nor pay per diem for projects local to our Monrovia headquarters. While our goal is to provide employees with regular employment, full-time hours are not guaranteed. Some projects may only entail part-time hours, others may require work in excess of 50 hours per week. Work hours, including day, swing and night shifts, will vary based on available projects, project specifications, employee availability, and employee experience.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

As an archaeological technician/monitor you will be expected to:

•           Perform cultural resources monitoring at construction sites

•           Implement mitigation measures to avoid impacts to cultural resources

•           Record data for scientific and compliance purposes using company forms and established

            field methodology

•           Prepare daily progress/monitoring reports

•           Use GPS equipment (Garmin/Trimble) for field data collection

•           Work independently or as part of a team

•           Conduct archaeological field surveys as needed

•           Complete other duties as assigned

•           Prepare  and submit detailed daily field notes

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

•           Bachelor’s degree in anthropology, archaeology, historic archaeology, or a related field

•           Minimum of five years in professional cultural resources management, including

            construction monitoring experience at both prehistoric and historical sites

•           Field experience or completed field school focused on archaeology of Southern

            California

•           Valid driver’s license, good driving record, reliable vehicle

•           Computer literate especially in word processing and database programs

•           Good verbal and writing skills

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

•           Experienced in prehistoric and historical archaeology of Southern California

•           Valid HAZWOPER 40HR Certificate (RSP will not reimburse for refresher course)

•           Experience in the environmental consulting industry, particularly with urban

            development and construction settings

                •         GIS experience

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

Due to the nature of field work and the possibility of working in remote locations and construction sites, the following are requirements for the advertised position:

 Physiological:

•           moderate light lifting (30 lbs) with occasional lifting of up to 50 lbs

•           repetitive motion of upper body and limbs

•           reaching above shoulders

•           use of fingers (dexterity and normal sensation required, use of both hands required)

•           extensive walking over rough terrain

•           standing in limited spaces for extended periods

•           use of both legs (prosthesis acceptable if full mobility is demonstrated)

•           near sighted vision acceptable if vision correcting device is used

•           far-sighted vision acceptable if correctable to 20/40

•           depth perception, color vision and hearing normal (aid permitted)

•           ability to detect odors

•           clear speech

 

Environmental Conditions will include working indoors and outdoors, and may include work:

•           at high altitude

•           in excessive heat or cold

•           in excessive humidity or dampness

•           with excessive continuous noise

•           on slippery and uneven walking surfaces

•           working around machinery with moving parts

•           working around moving objects or vehicles

•           working in close proximity to others

•           protracted or irregular hours of work

•           working with shovels or other hand tools

•           riding in a helicopter or 4-wheel drive vehicle over rough terrain
