The desired candidate must possess a Master's Degree in anthropology, archaeology, history, American Studies, or related field, in order to meet the Secretary of the Interior's "Professional Qualifications Standards", as well as the Guidelines for Archeological Investigations in Maryland of the Maryland Historical Trust, and the Guidelines for Archeological Review of The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC).
Individual is responsible for the overall supervision of the Natural and Historical Resources Division (NHRD) County-Wide Archaeology Program and Dinosaur Park.
Includes supervision of full time and part time intermittent staff, graduate interns and volunteers, and the management of facilities such as the Archaeology Program Office, Laboratory, and Mount Calvert Mansion. Serves as project manager for all NHRD Archaeology Program and contractor excavations. Coordinates with Park Planning & Development Division planners and landscape architects, engineers and construction inspectors for archaeological and preservation projects.
Provides project management for archaeological and preservation contractors. Responsible for preparing/writing Scope-of-Work and Requests-for-Proposals for archaeological and preservation projects. Monitors contractors work and reviews and approves reports to ensure compliance with Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Archeology and Preservation, the Maryland Historical Trust Guidelines for Archeological Investigations, and Prince George's County Planning Board's Guidelines for Archeological Review. Fills out Prince George's County Historic Preservation Commission Historic Area Work Permits (HAWP).
Management of parklands includes Mount Calvert Historical and Archaeological Park, Northampton Slave Quarters and Archaeological Park, Cherry Hill Cemetery, and the management and development of Dinosaur Park.
Responsible for planning and creating exhibits at M-NCPPC facilities. Produces public interpretive materials such as brochures, pamphlets, archeological reports, professional journal articles and conference papers.
Within the M-NCPPC the Archaeology Program Manager serves as the liaison for archaeological issues between the NHRD and Park Planning and Development Division, Maintenance and Development, and the Planning Departments and ITC Division. Ensures that M-NCPPC projects comply with all Federal, State and County rules, regulations and permits for projects that may affect archaeological resources.
Gives presentations to and informs the Prince George's County Planning Board and County Council on M-NCPPC related archaeological issues.
Serves as a liaison between the M-NCPPC on archaeological and paleontological issues to the Maryland Historical Trust (MHT), MD State Highway Administration (SHA), Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), National Park Service (NPS), and utilities such as the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC), PEPCO, Washington Gas, and communication services such and Comcast and Verizon.
Serves as the representative of the M-NCPPC to the Council for Maryland Archeology (CFMA). Represents the M-NCPPC on the Maryland Archeology Month Committee (MAM) and as liaison to the Archeological Society of Maryland (ASM) and the Smithsonian Institution.
Manages M-NCPPC facilities and archaeological and historic sites
Responsible for overall management and maintenance of NHRD Archaeology Program office and laboratory.
Responsible for coordinating any archaeological projects on the M-NCPPC's 27,000 acres of parkland including 54 historic sites and resources. Obtains and ensures compliance for permits for archaeological and preservation projects at M-NCPPC historic sites and properties.
Responsible for management, restoration, and maintenance and interpretation of the Mt. Calvert historic house and archaeological site.
Responsible for the management, restoration and maintenance and interpretation of the Northampton Slave Quarters and Archaeological Park, Cherry Hill Cemetery, and Nottingham archaeological site.
Coordinates with outside organizations, such as the Archeological Society of Maryland (ASM) Prince George's Historical Society (PGHS) and the African American Historical Preservation Group (AAHPG), and individuals with interests in archaeological and historic sites and resources.
Public Outreach Programs
Gives presentations and lectures to county and state civic groups and organizations.
Conducts hands-on archaeology programs with county, private, and home schooled children.
Creates, edits, implements, and manages interpretive programs, displays, exhibits, and brochures about archaeology at M-NCPPC facilities. Coordinates with Public Affairs and Media Division.
Serves as the M-NCPPC's main point of contact for dissemination of information to the public and media on archaeological and paleontological issues and programs.
Attends community association meeting to address issues relating to archaeology, historic preservation and paleontological issues.
Provides professional and technical archaeological services
Directs excavations at M-NCPPC archaeological/historical sites in Prince George's County.
Responsible for supervising the cataloging, conservation, analysis and curation of artifact collections from M-NCPPC sites.
Responsible for creating the scope-of-work, writing proposals, and soliciting proposals from archaeological and preservation contractors.
Work Conditions:
Works in office and the field.  Occasionally works night and weekend hours.
Monitors, assists, and approves contractors work.
 Minimum Qualifications:
1. Bachelor's degree in history, American studies, museum studies, archaeology, education, historic preservation, or a related field; and
2. Five years of progressively responsible experience, including two years as a program coordinator or supervisor; or
3. Master's degree in one of the above fields; and three years of related experience; or
4. An equivalent combination of education and experience.
5. A valid driver's license, or the ability to acquire one.
