Johnson, Mirmiran & Thompson (JMT) is seeking a part-time Archaeologist with 10 to 20 years of direct experience in archaeological geophysics for our Raleigh, North Carolina office to assist with project-based work. The position will entail technical work associated with conducting geophysical investigations using remote sensing methods such as ground penetrating radar, magnetometry, and resistivity.
 
The successful candidate will be part of an interdisciplinary team comprised of archaeologists, architectural historians, historians, environmental scientists, engineers and planners focused on existing client support, new business development, and internal staff mentoring. The preferred candidate will enjoy a variety of working conditions ranging from field efforts, office analysis, and report writing. Responsibilities will include:
 
Archaeological fieldwork (Phase I, II and III), working with other JMT archaeologists to determine project needs,
Use data acquired from remote sensing efforts to help direct further investigations or interpret potential archaeological remains/features;
Write technical archaeological reports relating to geophysical efforts to be used as independent documents/appendices or assist principal investigator in the integration of results into large body of work;
Work with technical field, lab and office staff, managers and administrative staff to ensure that projects meet JMT quality standards.

Required Skills
 
The qualified personnel must have experience in eastern United States archaeology required (Mid-Atlantic preferred). Qualified applicants must have extensive experience conducting geophysical investigations using a variety of remote sensing methods (e.g GPR, Magnetometer, Resistivity). Knowledge and understanding of geoarchaeology, ESSI equipment as well as RADAN and SURFER software are required.
 
The preferred candidate should enjoy working in the outdoors as required to complete job tasks. The job will require but may not be limited to certain physical demands while performing duties in the field. These physical requirements will include the ability to walk, stand, kneel, or bend for extended periods of time and be able to carry field equipment and supplies long distances. Field work may be conducted during any time of the year and may occur in a variety of weather and climate conditions, as needed. The candidate is not required to perform field work in hazardous weather conditions. Must be willing to travel throughout the U.S. for brief (e.g., 1 or 2 week) work
Required Experience
 
A Master’s Degree from an accredited program with a focus in geoscience along with a minimum of 10 years’ experience of work directing associated with Archaeological projects.
 
The preferred candidate will have demonstrated experience conducting geophysical work in all phases of Archaeological Investigations. The preferred candidate will be familiar with Section 106 requirements as they pertain to various state and federal agencies. Knowledge of federal and state regulations and successful interaction with regulatory agency personnel are also required. Additional requirements include:
 
Experience working with federal regulations including Section 106 and NEPA
Experience writing proposals and preparing budgets for geophysical investigations
Experience with ESSI equipment
Experience with RADAN Software
Experience with SURFER Software
Experience with Microsoft Office, GIS, and GPS applications.
 
Preferred Experience:
 
Experience working various state agencies including regional DOTs (Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Maryland, Ohio, West Virginia, etc...)
Experience working with federal agencies including USACE, NPS and FERC
Registered professional geologist (PG)
