The Versar Environmental Services Group is seeking field technicians for a Phase I and Phase II archaeological project located in Avon Park, Florida. The project will require approximately 33 field days to complete and is scheduled to begin January 9, 2017.

Applicants should have experience conducting archaeological surveys and site documentation, which includes feature and artifact identification, excavating shovel test pits and test units, and keeping detailed and accurate records, photographs, and maps. Prior experience in Florida and knowledge of Florida prehistory and history is preferred.

Per Diem and single occupancy lodging will be provided. The position will not exceed 40 hours per work week with no guarantee of 40 hours in any given week.

This position requires working 8-hour days and the capability of walking up to 4 miles a day in rough terrain. Project tasks will include archaeological survey and subsurface testing. Individuals must possess a valid driver's license and have access to reliable transportation. Prospective candidates must be capable of digging numerous shovel test pits in compact and wet soils, lifting/carrying (up to 50 lbs.), and screening sediments for cultural materials. Candidates must also be capable of conducting field duties, often with limited or no support, in extreme environments.
 
In addition to technical capabilities, individuals must be able to meet the requirements of various company and project safety and security requirements (i.e., no smoking in designated areas, UXO training, signing confidentiality agreements, etc.).

To qualify for the position, individuals must possess a BA/BS degree in Anthropology or Archaeology, as well as the successful completion of an archaeological field school. Qualified candidates must demonstrate knowledge of GPS technology, ability to keep quality field records, and assist field supervisors in filling out the necessary forms and paperwork that accompany survey and testing projects.  Successful candidates must demonstrate basic knowledge of prehistoric and historic archaeological materials.  Applicant must a positive attitude, good written and verbal communication abilities, strong organizational skills, and the ability to use technology.
