This recruitment will be used to fill 1-2 seasonal appointments. These appointments are not to exceed 1039 hours in a twelve month period, although positions may be terminated sooner or extended depending on management needs.
The enter-on-duty date is approximately mid February of 2017.
Shared government housing may be available.
Duties
Incumbent(s) will be assigned to the Resources Management and Research Division of Zion National Park and the Cultural Resources Management (CRM) crew with the following tasks:  cultural resources data collection via GPS units, 3D laser scanners, and iPads; data entry in NPS databases (e.g., IMACS, ASMIS, GIS, Zion's CRM database, etc.); archaeological inventory, recording/documenting new sites, conducting condition assessments, monitoring of cultural resources during construction projects; compiling technical information for report preparation and public educational opportunities; and preparation of artifacts/objects, and documentation for curation.  Incumbent(s) will also thoroughly document prehistoric and historic cultural resources with 3D laser scanner (i.e., field data collection and data processing); compiling and assuring accuracy/completeness of comprehensive cultural resource documentation; conducting resource condition assessments and implementing preservation treatments; writing project reports and public outreach materials that interpret cultural resources of the park.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is partially sedentary with prolonged standing, walking, and bending often required. Heavy items (e.g., packs up to 50 pounds) must be lifted and carried on a routine basis.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is performed both in an office setting and in the field. Survey and excavation work is typically performed in isolated areas; the incumbents must therefore be familiar with outdoor safety and survival skills and must be able to operate a vehicle on rough roads. Sustained periods of camping under primitive conditions are routine.
AREA INFORMATION/HOUSING INFORMATION: Zion National Park is located in southwestern Utah. Daytime temperatures average 90 to 100 in the summer and 55 in the winter. Nighttime lows range from 70 in the summer to 30 in the winter. Minimal shopping is available in Springdale, Utah located two (2) miles from Park Headquarters. A Full range of shopping, medical, dental, religious and recreational facilities are available in Hurricane, (25 miles), St. George, (45 miles), and in Cedar City, Utah (63 miles). Elementary school (grades K-6) is available in Springdale (closest town to the park) with bus service provided. Junior high and high school is available in Hurricane, with bus service provided. Dixie State University is located in St. George and Southern Utah University is located in Cedar City.
