Cultural Resource/Archaeology Specialist


Working collaboratively with BLM Winnemucca District, the Great Basin Institute is recruiting to hire a Cultural Resource/Archaeology Specialist to support cultural resource projects on district-managed lands. The Specialist will support all aspects of the District’s cultural resource program and will be exposed to all facets of a federal land management agencies operations. Specific duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
•    Conducting literature searches and using NVCRIS (Nevada Cultural Resource Information System) to complete Class I inventories.
•    Determining cultural needs for specific projects and completing CRINAs (Cultural Resource Inventory Needs Assessment) using the information collected during the Class I inventories.
•    Complete field visits and Class II and Class III surveys.
•    Compile Class I inventory and Class II or Class III survey information to assist in writing survey reports and “Cultural Resources” sections in NEPA documents.
•    Prepare for Interdisciplinary Team (IDT) project meetings by reviewing meeting/project materials provided by the project lead prior to the meeting and completing a preliminary records search of the project area.
•    Properly file cultural documents to help maintain adequate records.
The successful applicant will work in a team setting and be exposed to a myriad of resource areas outside of cultural resources including natural resource, recreation, rangeland, and wildlife management, as well environmental monitoring. The selected candidate will be exposed to a federal land management work environment and will receive training in the appropriate areas where needed to ensure compliance with those determinations required in the BLM H-1601-1 Land Use Planning Handbook.
Compensation, Benefits & Timeline:  
•    Rate of Pay: $23.00/hour

•    Timeline: 6- to 7-month appointment beginning in March 2017, or upon availability and completion of a Department of Interior Background Investigation
Winnemucca, NV – located in northern Nevada, along the I-80 corridor, Winnemucca is a town of approximately 7,200 residents and sits at an elevation of 4,200 feet above sea level. The surrounding landscape is typical of the Basin and Range province and sage steppe ecosystem that predominates this high desert region. The BLM Winnemucca District (WD) encompasses roughly 11 million acres, of which 7.38 million acres are public lands managed by the BLM, including the Black Rock Desert-High Rock Canyon Emigrant Trails National Conservation Area and surrounding Wilderness areas, and affords users ample opportunities for year-round recreation, rock hounding, and wildlife and wild flower viewing, among other opportunities. The town boasts a rich Basque and Pioneer history and is a gateway to the annual Burning Man Festival. Winnemucca is located approximately 2.5 hours northeast of Reno, NV; 1.5 hours west of Elko, NV; and 4 hours south of Boise, ID.
Technical requirements:
•    Degree in archaeology, anthropology, or cultural resource management – in particular, historic and prehistoric Great Basin archaeology – Applicants with advanced degrees encouraged to apply;
•    A minimum of 1 year of experience and understanding of the proper steps required to conduct archeological site surveys and assess site condition, desired (e.g.: mapping, data recording, site photography, figuring out location of and routes in to and out of survey site, and drawing artifacts, structures, and sketch maps as needed) - experience commensurate with the Secretary’s standards for permitting as Crew Chief (especially in northern Nevada), preferred;
•    Experience using ArcGIS 10.x and operating hand-held GPS units for navigation and electronic field data collection (previous experience operating Trimble units a plus); 
•    Experience preparing, reviewing and documenting archeological fieldwork, excavations and/or historical properties; 
•    Ability to read and interpret topographical maps and navigate using a compass; 
•    Strong written and oral communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate in an Interdisciplinary Team setting, and educate a diverse public on BLM land management (multiple-use) principles and cultural resource management concepts;
•    Experience conducting research and literature reviews, reviewing and drafting technical reports, and document editing; and
•    Previous experience working with the BLM and/or working in the Central Great Basin region highly desirable.
Additional requirements:
•    Ability to work independently and in a team setting to accomplish project goals;
•    Possess good organizational skills with ability to meet deadlines and produce professional deliverables including draft documents for team review;
•    Ability to operate basic computer equipment, including scanners, and Microsoft Office programs;
•    Flexibility and capability to meet the demands of rapidly changing plans and schedules;
•    Possess a valid, state-issued driver’s license and clean driving record with experience safely operating 4WD trucks on and off paved roads, including narrow and steep roads, and conducting routine vehicle maintenance;
•    Ability to work in harsh and rapidly changing environments, work in all types of weather conditions, traverse uneven terrain, carry upwards of 40 pounds in a backpack, and otherwise maintain good physical condition; and
•    Complete a Department of Interior (DOI) Background Investigation (BI). Applicants who already possess a fully adjudicated BI will be strongly considered.
