Physical Demands: Works in an office setting at this level, however, in order to gather samples and complete inventory activities, may be required to hike or ride vehicles or horses over rough terrain, and perform duties that require recurring bending, crouching, stooping, reaching or lifting. Work may also include lifting of moderately heavy items, such equipment and samples.
Working Environment: May be exposed to discomfort from extremes in weather temperatures. May subjected to hostile wildlife, chemicals and physical hazards.
Duties
The Archaeologist writes and prepares heritage and paleontological resource input for portions of environmental documents such as environmental assessments and planning documents, and coordinates with other specialists for multiple use documents.
Prepares and describes heritage program projects as part of the budget process. Ensures heritage program accomplishments and targets identified are reasonable and achievable.
Ensures collections from public lands, and the associated records, are deposited in repositories that meet federal curatorial facility standards. Documents and reports to management information regarding collections deposited at curation facilities and compiles data for the annual heritage report.
Designs and implements resource inventory strategies and sampling designs to obtain required data on heritage resources within a given project area. Conducts inventories to locate heritage resources and determine impacts due to developmental activities in accordance with applicable federal laws, regulations and policies.
