GIS SPECIALIST, Fredericksburg, Virginia

Dovetail Cultural Resource Group, a woman-owned firm with offices in Fredericksburg, Virginia and Wilmington, Delaware, is seeking a full-time GIS Specialist, to be based out of our Fredericksburg headquarters. The primary responsibility of the GIS Specialist is the production of maps and other graphics using advanced software, including Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and/or computer-aided drafting (CAD) software. Additional responsibilities may include creation of predictive models; coordination with Dovetail staff and clients to ascertain project needs and standards; maintenance, use, and setup of handheld GPS units and related field equipment; training staff on data gathering methods; and assisting with spatial data interpretation. Occasional travel may be needed to assist and/or train field staff on the set-up and use of data collection equipment or to perform data collection tasks.

Minimum Qualifications

·   Bachelor’s degree in anthropology, history, or a closely related field

·   Two years experience in cultural resource management

·   At least one of the following: a college course in GIS, CAD, or related software, or 6 months of professional experience using GIS, CAD, or similar software in a cultural resource management context

·   Ability to travel occasionally, generally for short periods of time

Critical Skills and Competencies

·   Advanced knowledge of GIS software and equipment, particularly ArcGIS 10.3, ArcPad, and Trimble GPS units

·   Excellent analytical and design skills, as well as the ability to follow Dovetail’s technical guidelines and produce accurate, aesthetically-pleasing maps and graphics

·   Proven ability to prioritize tasks and maintain an organized approach to work

·   Ability to georeference and digitize historic and client maps

·   Ability to create and maintain file geodatabases, shapefiles, and associated data

·   Accurate and effective verbal and written communication

·   Basic understanding of archaeological field methods

·   Strong leadership skills, including a professional demeanor

·   Basic understanding of federal preservation law, particularly Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act

·   Familiarity with SHPO maps and graphics standards in one or more states that Dovetail serves

Additional qualifications that are preferred, though not required, include familiarity with computer-aided drafting (CAD) software, supervisory level field experience in the archaeology of eastern North America, and a working knowledge of the prehistory and history of one or more states in Dovetail’s service area.
