This position is located in the Division of Resource Management at the Antietam National Battlefield Park in Sharpsburg, MD. Antietam National Battlefield covers 3,288 acres in Washington County, Maryland. It lies north and east of the small, historic town of Sharpsburg, Maryland, in a rural setting along MD Routes 34 and 65. The nearby cities of Hagerstown, Maryland and Frederick, Maryland, offer all amenities. Antietam National Battlefield is approximately 70 miles or 1 1/2 hours from both Washington, DC, and Baltimore, Maryland.
This is an entry level historian trainee position with Antietam National Battlefield Park. The incumbent serves as a Historian in the Resource Management Division and provides assistance to the Chief of Resource Management and the Exhibit Specialist to gain knowledge and understanding in historic preservation and cultural resources management activities.
This appointment is not to exceed 1040 hours in a twelve month period, although position may be terminated sooner or extended depending on management needs. This position is covered under a rehire authority. At management's discretion, the incumbent may retain non competitive rehire/extension eligibility to the same position, in the same location, with the same title and grade as long as 1040 hours are not exceeded in a service year.
This position is being announced at the full performance level.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work requires some physical exertion such as long periods of standing; walking over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces; recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities; and, recurring lifting of moderately heavy items.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is performed indoors and occasionally outdoors with moderate risks.

Duties
The duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
Provides assistance to the Chief of Resource Management
Provides assistance to Exhibit Specialist 
Shadows other specialists to gain knowledge and understanding in historic preservation and cultural resources management activities
Conducts research to locate information such as photographs and descriptions of historic features of the battlefield
Assists with battlefield restoration
Updates monument and structure files
Assists with condition assessments of monuments and structures
Assists with monument cleaning and preservation treatments
Works with park volunteers, individuals and groups to complete resource management projects
Assists with planning and organizing projects
Reviews research documents prepared by others and provides comments as needed
Assists with preparation of compliance for projects related to cultural resources in PEPC
