Archaeological Field Director - Bismarck, North Dakota

Beaver Creek Archaeology is an established Cultural Resource Management firm headquartered in Bismarck, North Dakota, which is currently seeking to fill one or more vacancies for an Archaeological Field Director. This position is a full time seasonal position, up to 6 months, with the potential for a full-time permanent position with benefits. The candidate will be based out of Bismarck, North Dakota. The successful candidate must be able to meet the minimum requirements to be a Secretary of the Interior-qualified professional Archaeologist. Fieldwork will be conducted primarily throughout North Dakota, Montana, Minnesota, and South Dakota. Salary will be dependent upon experience. 

Minimum Qualifications:
  • M.A. or M.S. in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a closely related field
  • Experience with Trimble GPS or similar hardware
  • Ability to work in the field for up to 85% of the time during field season (frequently with overnight stays)
  • Ability to walk long distances in extreme weather through rugged terrain
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
  • Pass a Pre-employment and Random DOT drug test as well as annual drug tests

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Previous field experience in North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, and Montana (or a combination of the aforementioned)
  • 3 years of relevant work experience to include 1 cumulative year in supervisory roles
  • Faunal and/or Lithic analysis experience
  • Lab and/or artifact curation experience
Field Director Responsibilities:
  • Perform and supervise Phase I, II, and III archaeological fieldwork and report on results
  • Apply problem solving skills in order to optimize project completion
  • Direct data management and reporting for simultaneous projects under strict deadlines
  • Work closely with all staff regarding project work, scheduling, and data exchange
  • Maintain clear and detailed field notes and field forms
  • Attentive to details with an ability to multi-task
  • Undertakes responsibility for the project (including but not limited to: asking the necessary questions, booking hotel rooms, overseeing and managing crew members, communicating with office on project status and any concerns, etc…)
  • Successfully complete small and large scale reports
Physical Requirements:
  • Regularly sit and/or drive for hours at a time
  • Walking/Surveying for hours at a time (approximately 10 miles per day)
  • Utilizing vision to look for objects on the ground as well as the observation of objects at both long and short distances
  • Able to utilize hands to drive, hold GPS, camera, and other necessary field equipment and as needed to safely work with shovels, augers, trowels, screens
  • Able to traverse across uneven and rough terrain under various weather conditions (including but not limited to: extreme heat, extreme cold, and rain)
  • Ability to bend-over, squat/stoop down to inspect items and as needed to work on any testing projects
