The Archaeology and Collections Branch of the Fairfax County Park Authority (FCPA) is currently accepting applications for collections technicians to assist with an ongoing collections care project.  Duties consist primarily of laboratory collections and curation work including, but not limited to: inventory, artifact cataloging, data entry, labelling, and packing artifacts for final curation.  The FCPA archaeological program is public, engaging the interested public and working with volunteers and interns with a range of experience.

A BA in Archaeology, Anthropology, History, Museum Studies or related field is preferred as is prior archaeological laboratory experience in the Middle Atlantic region. Successful candidates will have a demonstrated working knowledge of stone tool material types and point typology, ceramic types from colonial to the mid-20th century, and an understanding of descriptive artifact cataloging.  Attention to detail is particularly important, likewise preference will be given to applicants with experience in MS Access or Re:Discovery or similar databases.

Collection technicians are classified as Limited Term Employees (LTEs) and as such are not eligible for paid holidays, paid vacation, or retirement.  Funding for relocation is not available.  A range of medical benefits are available for purchase through Fairfax County.  Compensation is $14.50/hr.  All work is local; no per diem is available, and the metropolitan Washington D.C. area has a high cost of living.  In general, the work schedule is Monday through Friday.  LTEs are limited to 1560 hours per calendar year (30 hours per week).

Interested persons should apply directly, sending a .pdf resume and list of three references to Aimee Wells aimee.wells@fairfaxcounty.gov with Collections Assistant in the subject line.

Application deadline is August 18th.  Candidates will be contacted for interviews by August 25th.
