New Jersey: material culture specialist/historic artifact cataloger


RGA, Inc. is a full service cultural research management firm headquartered in Cranbury, NJ (central NJ). We are seeking an experienced material culture analyst/ historic cataloger to join our staff of archaeologists, historians, and historic preservationists for immediate work.

 Key responsibilities include:

Archaeological analysis of historic artifacts, with an emphasis on sites located in New England and the Middle Atlantic Regions;

Preparation of catalog appendices for cultural resource reports, forms, and other documents in compliance with contract requirements;

  • Maintaining the company terminus post quem (TPQ) database for historic artifacts and all digital and printed resources pertaining to material culture;
  • Effective communication with Principal Investigators and laboratory technicians;
  • Actively performing research via the latest articles, conferences, and workshops.

    Required Qualifications
    • Bachelor’s degree in anthropology or closely-related discipline with an emphasis in archaeology from an accredited institution.
    • Minimum of two years prior experience cataloging historic artifacts.
    • Experience with operating the Windows Office Suite (Word, Excel and Access).
    • Demonstrated knowledge of 17th-, 18th-, and 19th-century historic artifacts including, but not limited to, the identification of: ceramics, glass, architectural material, faunal remains, and items of personal adornment.
    • Demonstrated experience in the timely completion of artifact catalogs, preferably within a CRM capacity.
    • Experience performing material culture curation and familiarity with federal and state collection preparation guidelines.
    • All work will take place at our Cranbury, New Jersey headquarters

      Preferred Qualifications
      • Prior archaeological experience in a CRM-related field
      • Working understanding of federal and state historic preservation laws including Section 106 requirements and processes

§  Prior experience using ICMS collections database software

Other responsibilities may include assisting in proposal preparation as related to material culture, contributing to report preparation, research designs, treatment plans and other technical documents.  

This is a full-time position and compensation includes a complete benefits package. Salary is dependent upon qualifications.
