Project Archaeologist

Environmental Services, Inc. (ESI) is currently seeking a Project Archaeologist to conduct research, field work, and to reconstruct record of past human life and culture from human remains, artifacts, architectural features, and structures recovered through excavation or other means of discovery.  The Jacksonville, FL office has a full-time position open.  Our Raleigh, NC office has a part-time as needed position open.

Essential Job Duties

·       Collects artifacts made of stone, bone, metal, and other materials, placing them in bags and marking them to show where they were found

  • Consults and understands maps, site reports, and existing artifacts.
  • Creates a grid of each site and draw and update maps of unit profiles, stratum surfaces, features, and findings
  • Describes artifacts' physical properties or attributes, such as the materials from which artifacts are made and their size, shape, functions, and decoration
  • Records the exact locations and conditions of artifacts uncovered in diggings or surveys, using drawings, photographs and GPS as necessary
  • Contributes to research in order to assesses sites of past societies and cultures in search of answers to specific research questions
  • Contributes to technical reports.
  • Basic knowledge of federal, state and local regulations as they pertain to cultural resource management
  • Proficient in Microsoft Windows, Word, and Excel; basic knowledge of graphics programs
  • Careful about detail and thorough in completing work tasks
  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills

 Education, Experience, Certification, Registrations or Licensure

  • Bachelor’s degree with a concentration in Archeology, Anthropology or related field
  • College internship or field school while in college is preferred

 Physical Requirements

  • Must be willing to work in outdoor setting and (on occasion) in extreme environments (e.g. heat, cold, etc.)
  • Must be willing to work in hazardous conditions and execute appropriate safety protocols (e.g. insects, poisonous plants, rough terrain, etc.)
  • Must be able to lift, carry or otherwise move and position objects weighing up to 50 lbs. Work will require occasional weekend and/or evening work
  • Must be able to travel as needed, including out-of-town stays
