Physical Demands: Field work routinely requires physical exertion such as long periods of standing or walking over rough, uneven, rocky surfaces or mountainous terrain; recurring bending, crouching, stooping or reaching; using hand tools such as shovels, trowels, or screening devices; and lifting of moderately heavy items such as equipment and samples.
Work Environment: The work regularly involves moderate risks or discomforts which may require special safety precautions, e.g., adverse weather conditions, hazardous driving conditions, irritating or occasionally hazardous chemicals; hostile wildlife; and travel in off-road vehicles. Incumbent will adhere to all safety rules and regulations as prescribed in manuals/supplements or by the designated Safety Officer.
The incumbent serves as an Archeologist in the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) office such as a district office, field office or National Monument. The incumbent performs professional work in heritage resource management within the framework of BLM's multiple use mission. At the GS-09 level the incumbent applies a professional knowledge of standard archeological principles, theories, concepts, methods, and techniques to perform recurring, well-precedented projects. At the GS-11 level the incumbent applies a professional knowledge of archeological principles, theories, concepts, methods, and techniques to perform a variety of complex assignments related to heritage resource management. At this grade level the incumbent may also be required to train entry-level archeologists and oversee or monitor work completed by lower graded personnel. Working knowledge of geological and paleontological resources in order to write and prepare heritage and paleontological resource input for portions of environmental documents. Ensures collections from public lands, and the associated records, are deposited in repositories that meet federal curatorial facility standards. Conducts inventories to locate heritage resources and determine impacts due to developmental activities in accordance with applicable federal laws, regulations and policies. Consults with BLM management, land owners, state government officials, tribal governments, consulting parties and the public to provide information, develop opportunities for partnerships, meet legal requirements, and explain and apply new technologies. Ensures compliance with Section 106 and 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act. Writes and prepares heritage and paleontological resource input for environmental documents. Conducts outreach and educational activities. Enters and manages data in various geospatial databases (GIS). Prepares heritage program projects as part of the Planning Target Allocaton (PTA), Annual Work Plan (AWP), Mid-Year Review (MYR), and End of Year (EOY) process. Serves as Contracting Offcer Represent (COR) or a Contracting Officer Technical Representative (COTR) for contracts, and/or as a Program Officer for assistance agreements.
