Archaeology Technician - Battle Mountain, Nevada

Description:

Working collaboratively with BLM Battle Mountain District, the Great Basin Institute is recruiting to hire an Archaeology Technician to support a variety of activities relating to the Battle Mountain cultural resources database and field survey workload targets.

 

Specific tasks include:

·         Coordinate with the Battle Mountain District Archaeologist to identify sites that will need to be monitored, write-up monitoring forms, and update site forms when necessary;

·         Coordinate with the Battle Mountain District Archaeologist to identify areas for National Historic Preservation Act, Section 110, inventory: write reports and sites forms in compliance with the latest edition of the Guidelines and Standards for Archaeological Inventory as needed; 

·         Support a report scanning project in which BLM reports are scanned and sites are checked for inclusion into an electronic database;

·         Entering completed inventoried project areas, isolated finds, and new and updated site information into BMDO's secure cultural GIS database;

·         Determining what type and degree of cultural assessment needs to be conducted for newly proposed projects by using NVCRIS and the BMDO GIS databases to identify previous inventoried areas and previously recorded sites;

·         Using GIS databases to determine potential impacts and write recommendations concerning cultural resources in regards to mining notices;

·         Maintain and update an MS Access database that is accessible to Battle Mountain District archaeologists;

·         Maintain and update the GIS database as needed;

·         Maintain and update cultural paper files as needed;

 

Compensation & Timeline: 

  • Rate of Pay: $19.00/hour
  • Health insurance (medical and dental)
  • October 2017 – December 2017; potential for extension pending funding and favorable performance review
  • Local applicants with housing and who require minimal relocation time will be strongly considered

 

Location:

Battle Mountain, NV is located ~220 miles east of Reno, NV along Interstate 80. Battle Mountain and the surrounding area (pop. ~4,000) is predominantly rural; situated in the high desert (~4,500 ft. elevation) where ranching/mining are the local economic drivers. The Mount Lewis Field Office is responsible for managing approximately 4.5 million acres of public land typically of basin-and-range topography with Great Basin Desert/sage brush steppe ecotype.

 

 

Qualifications:

Technical requirements:

  • Educational and field experiences related to archaeology, anthropology, or indigenous peoples studies – in particular, historic and prehistoric Great Basin archaeology;
  • Experience and understanding of the proper steps required to conduct and assess the condition of archeological site surveys (e.g.: mapping, data recording, site photography, use of GPS, navigation of routes in to and out of survey site, and drawing artifacts or structures as needed);
  • Experience using ArcGIS 10.x;
  • Experience operating hand-held GPS units for navigation and electronic field data collection (previous experience operating Trimble units a plus);
  • Experience preparing, reviewing and documenting archeological fieldwork, excavations or historical properties;
  • Ability to read and interpret topographical maps and navigate using a compass;
  • Previous experience working with the BLM, or working in the Central Great Basin region desirable; and
  • Desire to assist with site forms, collecting and cataloging field data, coding sheets, slides, photographs and narrative data to ensure that field data relationships are catalogued, maintained, and entered into appropriate databases.

 

Additional requirements:

  • Ability to work independently to accomplish project goals and to communicate effectively, both written and orally, with a diverse public;
  • Possess good organizational skills and balance competing tasks;
  • Ability to operate basic computer equipment, including scanners, and Microsoft Office programs, including Access;
  • Flexibility and capability to meet the demands of rapidly changing plans and schedules;
  • Possess a valid, state-issued driver’s license and clean driving record;
  • Experience safely operating 4WD trucks on and off paved roads, including narrow and steep forest roads, and conducting routine vehicle maintenance; and
  • Ability to work in harsh and rapidly changing environments, work in all types of weather conditions, traverse uneven terrain, carry upwards of 40 pounds in a backpack, and otherwise maintain good physical condition.

 

  • Successful applicant(s) must complete a Department of Interior (DOI) Background Investigation (BI) or submit paperwork to BLM human resources indicating an active and fully adjudicated BI has already been completed prior to beginning position.
