Archaeological Experience

Field School- Thornton Abbey at North Lincolnshire, England

June 2016- July 2016

This was my first experience in the field. I spent two weeks excavating Medieval graves. This involved detailed and careful excavation of each grave including carefully uncovering the grave completely, removing and sorting each bone, and recording which bones were present and how complete they were. We also recorded the points at each corner of the graves in order to map them.

Field School- Pile Mound at Pall Mall, TN (40FN180)

July 2016- August 2016

This excavation was through East Tennessee State University and was led by Dr. Jay Franklin. We excavated what we believe to be a trash midden that contained many different things including pottery and faunal remains.

Volunteer excavation/ Recovery Project of Spanish Mount- Edisto Beach State Park in conjunction with University of South Carolina

March 5-12, 2017

I participated in this dig over Spring Break and learned a lot during that week. This site was eroding away because of storm damage and because of the river bank that lies right behind it. Due to flooding the river bank began to erode and in turn took Spanish Mount with it. This four-thousand-year-old site contained a variety of things including Tom’s Creek pottery, fish bones, turtle shell and bones, bird bones, and oyster and whelk shells. We were also in search of bone pits and successfully found several. During this week I was left in charge of supervising the screening. We also needed to collect a certain part of the oyster shells we found and bag up the other parts which were to be weighed. These were to be used to see the approximate volume of shells at the site and determine when people had been occupying the area. I was in charge of recording the weight of the shells coming from each feature and test unit.

Volunteer Excavation at Hampton Plantation- McClellanville, SC in conjunction with the College of Charleston, South Carolina State Parks, and the Charleston Museum

October 14- 17

This excavation was continuing work being done on the Hampton Plantation by the College of Charleston. I learned the methods used for plantation archaeology in South Carolina such as using five-foot by five-foot test units instead of meter by meter. I also learned a lot about the types of pottery found in that area for that time period.
