Field Archaeologists Needed Immediately for Survey in West Virginia

Location:  Clendenin, Kanawha County, West Virginia

Salary Range:  $15/hr. with $36 per diem

Type (Regular or Temporary): Temporary

Requirements: Pass pre-employment drug and alcohol test and complete 1-hour online safety training (cost of drug test is paid by company; time for pre-employment tasks will be compensated).

Commonwealth Heritage Group is in need of four archaeological field technicians for a Phase I survey near Clendenin, West Virginia. Fieldwork is already underway and is scheduled to run through November 21.

Responsibilities: Archaeological Field Technicians are responsible for conducting shovel testing, pedestrian survey, and site documentation, which includes feature and artifact identification and analyses; site descriptions; photographs; and mapping.  Archaeological field technicians are required to perform the following tasks in the field:

·         Excavate up to 10 shovel tests a day

·         Walk up to 6 miles a day in rugged terrain

·         Identify historic and prehistoric artifacts correctly

·         Conduct archaeological survey and testing

·         Complete site sketch maps

·         Complete field forms accurately and concisely

·         Use Trimble GPS units for navigation and recording field sites

-         Photograph resources

 

Qualifications:  Qualified candidates should possess, at minimum, a bachelor's degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a related field and have completed an accredited archaeological field school. Candidates must have experience identifying and recording prehistoric and historic resources in the Mid Atlantic/Mid South/Appalachia/Coalfields. Candidates must also have a minimum of 6 months of field experience (e.g., survey, testing, data recovery). Candidates must be able to perform physically demanding tasks in adverse environmental conditions (e.g., rugged terrain, remote locations, hot and cold temperatures). Candidates should also have good organizational skills, a positive attitude, strong work ethic, and willingness to learn and execute new tasks.
