Archaeological Field School in Southwest Colorado

Fort Lewis Archaeological Field School

When: May 21–June 29, 2018

Where: Fieldwork will take place at the Bowthorpe Site (5MT 9399), a Pueblo I/Pueblo II period habitation site in Southwest Colorado.

What: The Fort Lewis College archaeological field school is one of only seven RPA (Register of Professional Archaeologists) certified field schools in the United States. The course provides six weeks of field training in prehistoric archaeology. Students will gain experience in archaeological survey, excavation, manual and digital mapping, photogrammetry/drone-based photography, and architectural documentation. Field trips to local sites and evening lectures will provide context for the project.

Course: ANTH 369: Field Training in Archaeology (6 credits) is open only to students who have completed ANTH 201 or an equivalent introduction to archaeology class. The course is repeatable up to 12 credits, provided the field projects are different. 

Cost
: Tuition for Colorado residents is $2142.00, and tuition for out-of-state residents is $4218.00. An additional course fee not to exceed $1000.00 will be collected from each student to cover the cost of meals and other living expenses. Native American students may apply for a tuition waiver.

Other Information: Accommodations are primitive, with no electricity, running water or shelter. The program provides three meals per day, drinking water, portable toilets and a shower tent. Students will supply their own camping gear and other items of personal comfort not covered by student fees. A suggested list of personal items will be provided to each student after acceptance into the course.
