Free 2018 Bolgar International Archaeological Field School, Russia

Bolgar International Archaeological Field School is an annual multi-disciplinary field school held at the Bolgar Historical and Archaeological Complex, a World Heritage site located in the Republic of Tatarstan, Russia.

The School aims to provide a combination of practical training and academic content for students and young archaeologists in a multi-national environment. Every year, the school offers a range of programmes that consist of lectures, workshops, lab sessions, formal and informal roundtable sessions and excursions. The School is traditionally concluded by the Final Conference, where the students present their work and receive feedback from academic staff.

This field school is for both undergraduate and postgraduate students, regardless of nationality. Recent graduates up to the age of 35 are also welcome. Visa support for non-Russian nationals is provided, where required.


Available programmes 2018:

• Archaeological Glass

• Experimental Traceological Analysis of Ancient Tools from non-flint raw materials (antler, bone, stone, shell, metal)


• Paleoanthropology

• Archaeological Textile: Conservation, Restoration, Reconstruction.

The programs will be complemented by general lectures and workshops, final conference and by a variety of cultural activities.


Location, accommodation and food:

Accommodation is provided for all participants at Bolgar summer camping equipped with running water, electricity, toilets and showers.

The programme activities are held at Bolgar International Field School Building located close to main heritage sites of Bolgar Historical and Archaeological Complex. The school building is open 24/7 with wi-fi and couple of computers available for use.

Each participant is provided with breakfast, lunch and dinner at the canteen of Bolgar International Centre for Archaeological Research. 

The registration fee for international students is $61 (covers coffee breaks and visa support)
