We Dig the Castle - first held in 2015 - is Nottingham Castle's annual training excavation. A changing daily programme of induction, skills tutorials, task-based workshops, and excavation allows trainees to develop and practice skills in a variety of areas, and to chart the ways in which their skills have developed.

It returns for 2018 on weekdays between 16 July and 17 August inclusive (9.30am-4.15pm).

The team: We Dig the Castle is the ideal opportunity to develop your archaeological skills, particularly if you are working towards (or have) a qualification. We offer a supportive, small-group, environment. Trainees will work alongside professional archaeologists from Trent & Peak Archaeology and join in workshops and tutorials delivered by subject specialists.

We have an established reputation and strong working relationships with a number of archaeology departments, and are experienced in completing the placement journals that may be required by your university.  In addition, tuition is carefully designed to support progression through, and documentation via, the Archaeology Skills Passport.

The site: This is a unique chance to be part of an excavation and associated fieldwork in a Scheduled Ancient Monument, at a site famous across the world.

The training: 2018 offers We Dig the Castle trainees a brand new programme of test-pitting, excavation skills, recording, auguring, post-excavation, finds identification, historic building recording, digitisation and more. For the first time training will expand outwards to incorporate not only Nottingham Castle’s Outer Bailey but also its gatehouse bridge and adjacent areas and the historic Brewhouse Yard (known to have been the site of the royal mills from at least 1217).

Training sessions will include:

  • ·       Principles of excavation: stratigraphy and contexts
  • ·       Survey & laser scanning
  • ·       Excavation and test-pitting techniques
  • ·       Site recording: planning, levelling, section drawing, photography and context description
  • ·       Auguring
  • ·       Historic building recording
  • ·       Finds identification
  • ·       Post-excavation and processing
  • ·       Digitisation
  • ·       Environmental processing
