Archaeological Field Technician


 SWCA Environmental Consultants is seeking on-call Archaeological Field Technicians for work on a Federal project in the Sacramento, California area. The Project schedule will include a 10-day rotation pedestrian survey, which may be followed by additional fieldwork (site recording and monitoring).

40-hr HAZWOPER certification is required for this particular Project.

Part-time on-call employment may be extended beyond these projects. When project travel is required, per diem, hotel room accommodations, and field vehicles are provided.

  • Conduct archaeological fieldwork including survey and monitoring.
  • Assist with mapping responsibilities in the field, including collection of GPS data using Trimble units.
  • Working closely within a Team environment, including subcontractors.


  • A Bachelor's Degree in anthropology, archaeology, or a closely related field or six (6) months field experience with a range of field methodologies, including survey, testing, excavation, and monitoring required
  • Participation in an accredited field school or equivalent experience
  • Six (6) months experience working as a field archaeologist in California or adjacent desert regions, including the Great Basin required
  • Experience with the application of standard archaeological field and laboratory techniques
  • Knowledge of ArcPad or TerraSync is a plus
  • 40-hr HAZWOPER certification
  • Ability to travel to a location, walk/hike and conduct fieldwork for long hours, sometimes in inclement weather, rugged terrain, often at high altitudes, and ability to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds is required
