Archaeological Crew Chief - Denver, CO

Location: Denver area, Colorado

PaleoWest is seeking an experienced archaeological crew chief to fill a mid-level position in its Denver-area Rocky Mountain office. Project assignments for this position will involve a combination of travel throughout Colorado and to other states (e.g., Wyoming and New Mexico) and office-based reporting and project management. This is a full-time, hourly position with benefits.


  • The successful candidate will be required to:
  • Manage small projects
  • Oversee small field crews
  • Interface with clients, agencies, and the public as needed in relation to fieldwork
  • Record all types of prehistoric and historic sites and isolated finds
  • Conduct research using sources such as General Land Office records, COMPASS files, and historic aerial photographs and topographic maps
  • Write reports and complete resource forms


M.A. degree in archaeology or a closely related discipline is required. The successful candidate must meet the Secretary of the Interior's Professional Qualification Standards for Archeology. This position requires three or more years of professional archaeological experience, including some in Colorado. The ideal candidate will have at least some supervisory experience (e.g., crew chief) and working knowledge of federal and state cultural resource laws and practices. The ideal candidate will be permitted or permittable (4 months on-the-ground work) as a crew chief in at least one Colorado Bureau of Land Management region (Northwest District preferred). Additional desired qualifications include project experience in Wyoming and/or New Mexico, experience completing resource forms for those states, experience with iPhones and/or iPads, and experience conducting or assisting with architectural inventories.

Required Skills:

The successful candidate must have a valid driver’s license and experience conducting and overseeing archaeological inventories and recording diverse prehistoric and historic resources using Colorado Office of Archaeology and Historic Preservation forms. The successful candidate must also be skilled in written and oral communication and be able to work both with a team and independently. Finally, the successful candidate must demonstrate a positive work ethic, excellent attention to detail, reliability, and commitment to working in a teamwork environment. The ideal candidate will be able to independently evaluate resources for the National Register of Historic Places.
