Architectural Historian

Minimum Qualifications to be Considered for This Position:

M.A. degree in architectural history, historic preservation, public history, or closely related discipline required. The successful candidate must meet the Secretary of the Interior's Professional Qualification Standards for Architectural Historian. This position requires 3 or more years of professional experience as an Architectural Historian. The position also requires Colorado experience and a working knowledge of federal and state cultural resource and historic preservation laws and practices, including the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA). The ideal candidate will also have a good track record of business development and experience supervising, mentoring, and developing junior architectural historians.

The applicant must have experience conducting and directing architectural surveys and historical research and evaluating built-environment resources using Colorado Office of Archaeology and Historic Preservation Form 1403. The ideal candidate will also have good working knowledge of regulatory compliance, familiarity with Colorado-themed historic contexts, and strong written and oral communication skills. In addition, the ideal candidate will have experience conducting architectural history and historical research work along Colorado’s Front Range, as well as in other regions of Colorado, and experience preparing National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) nomination forms. The successful candidate must demonstrate reliability, a positive work ethic, the ability to manage and/or bid on multiple projects simultaneously, and a commitment to working in a team environment.

Primary Duties/Responsibilities:

·        Assist with marketing and business development efforts related to architectural history and historical research projects, prepare proposals, track budgets, and interface with clients, agencies, and the public on behalf of PaleoWest;

·        Manage projects or assist with project management, as appropriate for the project;

·        Perform archival and historical research using primary and secondary sources;

·        Perform oral history research, as needed;

·        Write historic background overviews and develop historic contexts that identify relevant themes and property types;

·        Independently or leading a small project team, plan and conduct architectural surveys of diverse residential, commercial, agricultural, and industrial buildings and structures using current state and national standards and evaluate those resources against local, state, and federal criteria of significance;

·        Prepare professional technical reports for architectural history and historical research projects related to NEPA and Sections 106 and 110 of the NHPA;

·        Review design plans for consistency with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards and Guidelines; 

·        Prepare Historic American Buildings Survey/Historic American Engineering Record/Historic American Landscapes Survey documentation meeting state- or national-level documentation requirements; and

·        Prepare NRHP and/or state or local register nominations
