Archaeological Technicians For Mid-Atlantic Projects

Dovetail Cultural Resource Group, a woman-owned firm with offices in Fredericksburg, Virginia and Wilmington, Delaware, is currently accepting applications for Archaeological Technicians for projects throughout the Mid-Atlantic. The primary responsibility of the Archaeological Technician is to perform archaeological fieldwork, though responsibilities may also extend to performing background research, working in the laboratory, or performing data entry or similar office tasks. Work is on a project-by-project basis, and schedules are generally Monday through Friday. Single occupancy hotel and per diem are provided for projects that are not local to our Fredericksburg or Wilmington offices.

Our hiring priority is for three available positions that would start this coming Monday, June 11, on a Phase I survey at Wallops Island, Virginia, with additional work to follow.

Minimum Qualifications: Completion of a Bachelor’s degree in anthropology, archaeology, or a closely related field and an accredited archaeological field school are preferred, though a minimum of four years of archaeological field experience within the cultural resource management industry may be substituted for education. Ability to dig, kneel, and crouch for extended periods of time, lift at least 40 pounds, and maintain adequate physical fitness to perform field tasks is critical, as is the ability to work outdoors in hot or cold temperatures, in conditions that may include wind, rain, and/or snow.

Preferred Skills and Experience: Prior field experience in cultural resource management is highly desirable. Archaeological technicians should be able to prioritize tasks and maintain an organized approach to work and should possess effective verbal and written communication skills. A working knowledge of standard archaeological field methods is important, including a basic understanding of data collection using handheld GPS units and the ability to read maps and use a compass. Applicants should have a basic understanding of the National Register of Historic Places Criteria for Evaluation and of the primary themes of prehistory and history in Dovetail’s service area.

Please submit a cover letter with availability, CV, and references to Nicki Sauvageau at Email or call (540-899-9170) with questions.
