Archaeological Field Lead - USFS/SMNRA


Background and Description:
The Great Basin Institute, in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service’s Spring Mountains National Recreation Area (SMNRA), is recruiting an Archaeology Field Lead to support a variety of cultural resource projects, and to provide oversight to a team of up to three (3) archaeology field technicians. As part of the analysis required by the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) and by the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) for potential ground disturbing projects, a Section 106 of NHPA cultural resource evaluation must be completed to evaluate effects to federally owned historic and prehistoric sites. In order to complete these specialist reports, surveys for archaeological resources need to be completed for all proposed projects.
The GBI archaeology field team will conduct Archaeological project surveys utilizing U.S. Forest Service Protocols. GBI archeology crew will fully document all new sites and any previously recorded sites that need to be updated, they will keep detailed records of survey results using standard archaeological methods, input the data into appropriate databases at the end of each week, and create maps using GIS technology. Data will be collected using the most accurate equipment available.  The archaeology crew will also develop the final site records and project reports in preparation for the SHPO consultation. The field team will also have the opportunity to take part in on-the-job training, as well as facilitated workshops and training opportunities, such Wilderness 1st Aid and ESRI ArcGIS on-line courses.
The Field Lead will coordinate with the U.S. Forest Service District Archaeologist to establish survey timelines to assure that all surveys are completed within appropriate timeframes, and serve as the primary liaison between the field team and USFS personnel. Additionally, the Lead will be responsible for the oversight of project activities, including ensuring adherence to agreed-upon protocols and procedures, serving as a positive role model for other field team members, and facilitating accurate completion and documentation of project efforts. The successful applicant will be enrolled in GBI’s AmeriCorps program and receive all associated benefits. 
Compensation and Benefits:  
o Living allowance: $24,930.00
o Education Award*: $5,815.00
o No cost Affordable Care Act-compliant health benefits (medical, dental, vision)
o Field per diem: $15/day when overnight field camping is required
o USFS housing provided at no cost

* AmeriCorps Education award may be used for past, present or future educational experiences including, but not limited to, paying off/down federal student loan debt and is valid for up to seven (7) years after completion of a term of service.
Contract & Timeline:  
o Annual appointment beginning October 15, 2018
o Full-time, up to 40 hours per week
The base of operations for this opportunity is north and west of Las Vegas, NV on the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area (Clark and Nye Counties, Nevada). The successful applicant will experience a tremendous diversity of habitat types ranging from the Mojave Desert habitat surrounding the SMNRA to the alpine forest on the mountain. Many developed and undeveloped recreational opportunities are available in the region ranging from rock climbing and bouldering, to mountain biking, hiking, and fishing, to skiing and snow shoeing during the winter. USFS Housing is located approximately 20 miles from the SMNRA office and the closest grocery store, so access to a personal vehicle is strongly encouraged.
Technical Requirements:
o Educational and field experiences related to archaeology, anthropology, or indigenous peoples studies;
o Experience and understanding of the proper steps required to conduct archaeological site surveys, including: mapping, recording, photographing, GPSing, figuring out location and routes into and out of sites, and drawing artifacts or structures as needed;
o Accurately assess the condition of the archeological survey sites (e.g.: whether or not a site has been impacted by either human or natural causes);
o Draw on previous experiences to develop archeological survey plans, including strategies for covering all accessible areas and the time necessary to cover an area;
o Experience preparing, reviewing and commenting on cultural resource reports documenting archeological fieldwork, excavations or historical properties; 
o Knowledge of GIS software (highly desirable, but not required); and
o Experience operating hand-held GPS equipment, reading a map, and using a compass for navigation.
Additional Requirements:
o Experience leading/guiding field technicians, students, and/or volunteer groups to complete field tasks;
o Self-motivated with ability to maintain a positive attitude while working in a diverse team environment;
o Experience working in the desert southwest or SMNRA, desirable;
o Ability to walk a minimum of 12km/day in challenging terrain and harsh and rapidly changing desert and mountainous conditions, and otherwise be in good physical condition;
o Willingness to camp in the field (front or backcountry) for consecutive days;
o Possess a valid, clean, state-issued driver’s license with the ability to operate a 4WD vehicle on or off paved roads;
o Meet AmeriCorps eligibility requirements: (1) U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status, (2) eligible to receive an AmeriCorps Education Award (limit of four in a lifetime or the equivalent of two full-time education awards), (3) pass National Sex Offender Public Website (NSOPW) and federal criminal background checks, (4) adhere to the rules, regulations and code of conduct as specified in the Member Service Agreement; and (5) not engage in any prohibited activities as listed in the Member Service Agreement.
