Archaeological Field Techs Needed- Austin, Houston, DFW, Tulsa


Cox|McLain Environmental Consulting, Inc. (CMEC), a small Austin-based firm with offices in Houston, DFW, and Tulsa, is looking to fill field technician and crew chief positions for multiple field projects in Texas and Oklahoma.  The primary function of the positions at all levels is to support senior cultural resources staff (archeology and historic resources Principal Investigators and/or Project Archeologists) as needed with fieldwork and subsequent paperwork/artifact processing. Duties may include performing pedestrian examination of the ground surface, digging shovel test units, observing/supervising mechanical excavations, correctly using Munsell soil color charts and other standard field tools/resources, recording units and sites on company- or agency-mandated forms, and other standard archeological survey and follow-up tasks at the direction of the PI/PA, as well as supporting historic architectural surveys.  Duties of crew chiefs also include supervising technicians, providing direction in field protocols and safety considerations, and performing real-time quality control on project documentation.  All positions may require bending, stooping, carrying field equipment, standing, and walking for extended periods of time, and making visual and tactile distinctions using color, texture, moisture content, depth, and distance. 

Compensation varies based on individual project budgets and candidate qualifications but generally ranges from $15/hour for entry-level field technicians up to a maximum of approximately $21/hour for highly experienced crew chiefs.  Typical per diem rate of $51/day, with GSA rate as applicable.  Expenses reimbursed per project contracts; cash per diem where allowed by the ultimate client but is not guaranteed for every project.  Single-occupancy lodging provided on multi-day projects. 

These positions are temporary positions on a project-specific basis, not on-call contracts.  Benefits and relocation assistance are not available.  Successful application/performance on one or more projects is not to be construed as a guarantee of future part- or full-time work.  Some projects may be associated with disaster-response efforts and may therefore require immediate mobilization to areas with few amenities and difficult conditions (e.g., low-lying zones after flooding). 

The successful applicant will possess, at a minimum, a bachelor’s degree in archeology, anthropology, geology, or a closely related field.  

Required: completion of recognized archeological field school; survey experience in Texas, Oklahoma, or the greater south and southwest United States; an overall dedication to excellence; a strong work ethic; a demonstrated ability to work independently; and solid field skills including the ability to work in difficult conditions (e.g., hot, humid environments) and to navigate in remote, rough, and/or heavily vegetated terrain using USGS topographic maps, aerial-base field maps, or handheld GPS units.

Preferred for senior level techs/crew chiefs: experience managing multiple technicians; graduate degree in archeology, anthropology, or closely related field; experience with a range of Global Positioning System (GPS) equipment; experience with historic resources surveys; familiarity with NHPA/NEPA compliance; previous resource-recordation experience in Louisiana and Texas (as applicable for individual projects), particularly historic-age archeological sites (plantations, farmsteads, etc.); previous safety training/certification (OSHA, CPR/First Aid, etc.).  

Preferred for all positions: candidates based near one of our office locations (Austin, Irving/DFW, Houston, Tulsa), as applicable for specific projects.
