Project Archaeologists, Crew Chiefs, and Technicians - Colorado

Espinoza Consulting Services (ECS) has immediate openings for a project archaeologist, crew chief, and multiple archaeological technicians to support numerous projects in the southwest and Rocky Mountain states. The project archaeologist position is permanent/salaried and includes competitive wages and company benefits (after a three-month probationary period). Crew chief and technician positions are hourly and based upon federal wage determinations. Some crew chiefs and technicians may also be retained after the 2018 field season as permanent staff.


All candidates MUST have experience in Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and/or Wyoming. The most immediate needs are in Colorado.
Ability to be permitted in multiple land jurisdictions (including Colorado and New Mexico BLM) is a plus. Travel is also an absolute requirement of employment and all positions will include housing and/or per diem. The preferred duty stations when not in the field will be La Jara/Alamosa, Colorado.


Project Archaeologist Requirements:

This position serves the project lead under the general direction of a principal investigator.  The individual will be responsible for day to day project management and assure project quality as specified in ECS Project Management and Quality Assurance Plans.  Position requirements include: 

·       Master’s Degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or related field AND five years of field/write-up experience.

·       Experience directing crews, managing projects and project budgets, and writing reports.

·       Possess strong writing, editing, and organizational skills.

·       Possess a working knowledge of Federal, State, and Tribal cultural resource regulations. NEPA experience is also desirable.

·       Perform all tasks specified below for crew chiefs and archaeological technicians.

·       Be able to perform physically demanding tasks in adverse environmental conditions (e.g., rugged terrain, remote locations, hot and cold temperatures). Most work will involve high altitude, back country, locations.

·       Possess good organizational skills, a positive attitude, strong work ethic, and willingness to learn.

·       Experience with ArcGIS 10 is desirable.

·       Must have a clean driver’s license.


Crew Chief Requirements

This position serves as crew leader to at least three Archeological Technicians, under the general supervision of the project archaeologist, and performs skilled survey, analysis, and recording tasks. Position requirements include: 

 

·       Bachelor’s Degree in Archaeology or Anthropology and three years field/write-up experience. Although not required, preference will also be given to individuals with a Master’s Degree.

·       Possess a working knowledge of Federal, State, and Tribal cultural resource regulations.

·       Possess strong field, writing, and organizational skills.

·       Possess strong computer, and GPS/total station skills.

·       Ability to supervise site recording and implement field data strategies, and assure work assignments are carried out to established standards.

·       Ability to assign tasks, monitor status, and assure timely accomplishment of workload.

·       Ability to perform all tasks specified below for archaeological technicians.

·       Be able to perform physically demanding tasks in adverse environmental conditions (e.g., rugged terrain, remote locations, hot and cold temperatures). Most work will involve high altitude, back country, locations.

·       Instruct employees in special tasks (as needed).

·       Experience with ArcGIS 10 is desirable.

·       Must have a clean driver’s license.


Archaeological Technician Requirements

Archaeological Technicians are responsible for conducting pedestrian survey, site documentation and possible site testing. Typical tasks include: feature and artifact identification and analyses; excavating shovel test probes (STPs); completing site descriptions, mapping, and other site and project records. Position requirements include:
 
 

·       Bachelor’s Degree in Archaeology or Anthropology and 18 months field experience.

·       Must have the ability to:

o   Identify historic and prehistoric artifacts and features.

o   Conduct archaeological survey and testing.

o   Complete sketch maps of features and sites.

o   Complete field forms accurately and concisely.

o   Use a GPS unit to both document resources and navigate back country terrain.

o   Use compass, topographical map and aerial photographs to record resources and/or navigate (as needed).

o   Properly photograph resources

o   Perform physically demanding tasks in adverse environmental conditions (e.g., rugged terrain, remote locations, hot and cold temperatures). Most work will involve high altitude, back country, locations.

o   Walk 5+ miles a day

o   Lift up to 40 lbs

·       Must work effectively in a team environment.

·       Must possess good organizational skills, a positive attitude, strong work ethic, and willingness to learn and execute new tasks.

·       Must have a clean driver’s license.
