Commonwealth Heritage Group, Inc. (Commonwealth) is seeking a senior-level associate to add to our Tarboro office to serve as a principal investigator. Opportunities to fill the role of project manager for select projects, clients, and/or market sectors are anticipated to rapidly develop for the successful candidate with sufficient prior experience. Tarboro, a historic town with a significant residential historic district and town common dating from 1760, is located near the I-95 corridor. It has a one-hour interstate connection to the Raleigh metropolitan area and lies near the cities of Greenville and Rocky Mount. Commonwealth services a broad range of market sectors and affords opportunities to work on a broad range of projects with staff in offices across the country. In addition, Commonwealth encourages professional development through conferences, workshop, and association participation.

The position requires a Ph.D. or M.A./M.S. in anthropology/archaeology with RPA registration and prior experience conducting or managing Phase I archaeological surveys, Phase II evaluations, and Phase III data recovery projects; preparing proposals; supervising office staff assigned to projects; and preparing and reviewing technical reports. Candidates with demonstrated prior experience in overall project management and client interface will be preferred, as will those with an analytical specialization in precontact or historical archaeology of the Southeastern or Mid-Atlantic regions. A solid understanding of the Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act process and the requirements for National Register of Historic Places evaluation of sites is essential for this position. The position will also entail the ability to understand and assure proper application of state and local regulations as well as specific agency guidelines as needed. Travel is a requirement of the position for job site review, occasional short-term fieldwork needs, meetings, and/or marketing, but extensive multi-night travel is not anticipated.

Salary range for this position is competitive and dependent on experience, with opportunities for advancement and a higher salary.
