Archaeological Field Director New Jersey and Eastern Pennsylvania


Field Director

Archaeology & Historic Resource Services, LLC (AHRS) is seeking a motivated and experienced archaeologist who can fulfill the duties of Field Director for projects throughout Central and Southern New Jersey, Eastern Pennsylvania and possibly in the Hudson Valley, NY for upcoming projects that we expect to extend throughout the fall and into next spring and summer.

The successful candidate must be a team player. He/she must have the ability to multi-task, including supervising multiple small surveys and/or monitoring projects concurrently. Experience directing Phase IB, II and III archaeological surveys and artifact analysis. The candidates must have knowledge of the literature and practice of prehistoric and historic archaeology in the American Northeast. The position may involve some travel and a current valid driver’s license is required. The successful candidate must be eligible to work in the United States.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

·         Directing fieldwork.

·         Scheduling field staff.

·         Writing reports and preparing forms to pertinent agency standards.

·         Problem resolution in field.

·         Training archaeological technicians in field methods, preparation of forms, and report writing.

·         Analyzing collections of cultural materials that fall within your particular analytic specialty.




            Graduate degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, or a closely related field.

            Minimum of 6 years of experience in the archaeological/cultural resources field.

            Focus in a particular analytic specialty in material culture or an aspect of environmental archaeology a plus.

            Excellent technical writing and time management skills.

            Solid experience with the application of standard archaeological survey and excavation techniques.

            Experience with PennDOT projects and familiarity with Pennsylvania artifact curation standards is desired but not required.
GPS and GIS experience a plus.

            Ability to travel and Conduct fieldwork activities in a safe and responsible manner, sometimes in adverse conditions and remote areas.

            OSHA 40 Hour Certification preferred but not required.

Compensation is competitive, and is based on experience and education. The successful candidate will be based out their home with travel for fieldwork required.
