Museum Technician


The Great Basin Institute seeks to hire a Museum Technician to work cooperatively with Lake Mead National Recreation Area (LAKE) and Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument (PARA) staff to support the Parks’ cultural resources program. Specific duties associated with museum, lab analysis, and data processing, include but are not limited to:

  • Museum collections and archives work including cataloging of backlog archives, scanning documents and historic photos, maintaining museum records, and other miscellaneous tasks associated with the museum collections;
  • Lab analysis and data processing duties include analysis and cataloging of artifacts, updating of databases, and report preparation; and
  • Performs museum housekeeping tasks including Integrated Pest Management (IPM).

The work is partially sedentary with prolonged standing, walking, and bending often required, and lifting and moving of heavy items weighing 50 pounds or more.


  • Rate of pay: $16/hour

o   Six month appointment beginning October/November 2018, or upon completion of a Department of Interior background investigation;

o   Potential for an extension up to one year, pending available funding and positive performance review;

o   40 hours per week; some overtime and weekend work may occasionally be required.


Lake Mead National Recreation Area (LAKE) Headquarters is in Boulder City, Nevada, a 30 minute drive from Las Vegas. LAKE encompasses nearly 1.5 million acres in southeastern Nevada and northwestern Arizona, including mountains, canyons, valleys, and two vast lakes. From the mouth of the Grand Canyon, the park follows the Arizona-Nevada border along what was formerly 140 miles of the Colorado River. Opportunities for outdoor recreation abound.


  • Educational experience with a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree focused on museum studies or a closely related field (history, museum studies, anthropology, library sciences, etc.); applicants who also have archeological field experience are also highly encouraged to apply
  • Knowledge of historic and/or prehistoric history and artifacts of the Mojave desert regions of the Southwest;
  • Familiarity with museum archives work, particularly within the National Park Service;
  • Experience in collections management to include registration, cataloging, research, preservation, restoration, housing, and conservation of collections of diverse types of prehistoric and historic period museum material;
  • Experience with ICMS or other museum collections management software;
  • Organizational skills to effectively plan and complete assigned workload within defined timelines;
  • Ability to effectively communicate to a diverse audience including co-workers, members of the pubic, and agency personnel;
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision;
  • Intermediate or higher skill using Microsoft Word, Access, and Excel, with ability to manually enter, manage, manipulate and graphically display data;
  • Self-motivated and detail-oriented, possessing strong organizational skills;
  • Flexibility to handle competing and changing priorities with a positive attitude;
  • Ability to work productively, consistently, and cooperatively as part of a team to accomplish mutual goals;
  • Possess a clean, valid, state-issued driver’s license;
  • Ability to complete activities including prolonged periods of deskwork, lifting and moving of heavy items weighing 50 pounds or more, regularly walk and drive between curation and other facilities; and
  • Other duties as assigned; occasional archeological fieldwork tasks may be assigned to qualified applicants.


Successful applicant must complete a Department of Interior (DOI) Background Investigation (BI) or submit paperwork to NPS human resources indicating an active and fully adjudicated BI has already been completed prior to beginning position.
