Senior Archaeologist Needed - El Paso, Texas



QRI is growing, and we are looking for a Senior Archaeologist to join our team. Our immediate need is for a technical lead to supervise a cultural resources survey for at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas. You should possess two years of experience in the Southwest region of the United States (southeastern California, Arizona, New Mexico, southern Utah, southwestern Colorado and west Texas) executing cultural resources surveys and evaluating sites for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Providing a chapter demonstrating your evaluation of sites under the NRHP would be useful, but not required, although documenting your experience at this task is a must. Experience with Jornada archaeology is a plus. The position requires a proven ability to draft reports of investigations. The position may also require the ability to prepare budgets and technical proposals for cultural resources activities.


·         Develop and review project schedules and budgets

·         Develop work plan to guide field sampling efforts

·         Lead a team of junior archaeologists in field cultural resources survey 

·         Record cultural resources in the field.

·         Evaluate cultural resources using Fort Bliss Significance Standards. This requires writing supporting arguments for the significance assessments for each historic property

·         Prepare either Texas and New Mexico state site forms

·         Draft technical survey reports


·         College or university degree of Master of Arts in Anthropology (Archaeology specialty) or closely related field is required 

·         At least four years of full-time professional experience or equivalent specialized training in archeological research, administration or management;

·         Two years of field and analytic experience in Southwestern archeology is required

·         Demonstrated ability evaluate historic properties under the National Register of Historic Places using a historic context that identifies the significant patterns that properties represent and defines expected property types against which individual properties may be compared. Fort Bliss has developed its own Significance Standards to conduct such evaluations, so familiarity with these standards is a plus

·         Experience with the TRU survey method is a plus

·         Demonstrated experience in supervising cultural resources surveys in the field

·         Ability to use a GPS unit.  Experience with GIS is a plus.

·         Experience preparing reports and site forms

·         Make recommendations based on the analysis of field data
