Archaeological Technician I

Epsilon Systems Solutions, Inc. Mission Solutions Group is currently seeking a part time Archaeological Technician I in Ridgecrest, CA.


Under the routine supervision of archaeological Field Supervisor, the Archaeological Technician I performs skilled archaeological fieldwork at field sites and assists in Cultural Resources Management projects while assisting in report writing and lab work for such endeavors.

Duties and Responsibilities:

·     Performs on-the-ground area searches for surface evidence of historic and prehistoric archaeological remains

·     Performs in-field analysis of archaeological remains, inclusive of describing artifacts' physical properties or attributes, such as the materials from which artifacts are made and their size, shape, function, and decoration

·     Assists in writing reports that record site history, methodology, and artifact analysis results, along with recommendations for conserving and interpreting findings

·     Researches reference material such as state and national register files, historic documents, archaeological reports, maps and aerial photos, and interviews source individuals concerning project areas

·     Consults site reports, existing artifacts, and topographic maps to identify archaeological sites

·     Assists with mapping responsibilities in the field, including collection of GPS data using Trimble units


Required Qualifications:

·     High school diploma or equivalent

·     0-2 years work related experience

·     Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance



·     General knowledge of archaeological field practices

·     Knowledge of historical events and their causes, indicators, and effects on civilizations and cultures

·     Knowledge of group behavior and dynamics, societal trends and influences, human migrations, ethnicity, cultures and their history and origins

·     Knowledge of principles and methods for describing the environment, including their physical characteristics, locations, interrelationships, and distribution of plant, animal, and human life


·     Effective oral and written communication skills

·     Logic and reasoning skills to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems

·     Learning skills to understand the implications of new information for both current and future problem-solving and decision-making



·     Ability to combine pieces of information to form general rules or conclusions

·     Ability to work independently and as part of a team

·     Ability to apply general rules to specific problems to produce answers that make sense

·     Ability to listen and understand both information and ideas presented through verbal and written communication

·     Ability to identify resources upon visual inspection

·     Ability to effectively communicate information and ideas verbally and in writing

·     Ability to learn to record the exact locations and conditions of artifacts identified on survey, using drawings and photographs as necessary


Preferred Qualifications:

·     Knowledge of ArcPad and Trimble unit

·     Bachelor degree in related field


ADA Notations:

·     Walking 8-10 miles a day with a field pack and ample water, over rugged terrain in variable weather conditions which likely will include high and low temperatures, depending on the season.  A portion of the duties require working outdoors under extreme temperature, strenuous physical effort associated with hiking during archaeological reconnaissance and survey; often in uninhabited areas
