VHB Atlanta needs Senior Archaeologist, RPA - Full time position with 7-10 years experience


VHB’s Atlanta office is seeking to employ a full-time Senior Archaeologist to support our Environmental Services Division. Well-qualified candidates will have primary experience conducting Phase I, II, and III archaeological investigations throughout the southeastern United States. In addition, the ideal candidate would demonstrate the ability to work successfully, both independently and as part of a larger cultural resource team, in managing the key responsibilities required of the position.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Lead, author, or review Archaeological Resource Identification/Survey Reports at the Phase I, II, and III level of investigation
  • Assist with mentoring and leading field, junior, and mid-level staff archaeologists
  • Manage scope, schedule and budget for small and large archaeological projects
  • Review/respond to project Requests for Proposals (RFPs)
  • Assess archaeological site significance under Criterion D of the NRHP
  • Assess impacts to archaeological resources
  • Prepare recommendations for the continued preservation, avoidance, and/or minimization of eligible or listed archaeological resources
  • Prepare field survey and geographic maps using GIS
  • Coordinates regulatory compliance efforts with federal, state, and municipal agencies.
  • Provides artifact analysis and assists curation efforts
  • Conducts archival and historical background research
  • Support and build client relationships
  • Provide support and technical assistance with senior level staff
  • Assist with mapping responsibilities in the field, including collection of GPS data using Trimble units

 Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in anthropology, archaeology, or a closely related field
  • Current standing member of the Register of Professional Archaeologists (RPA), or qualified archaeologist under the Secretary of the Interior guidelines
  • Minimum of 6 years experience as a professional archaeologist
  • Minimum of 2 years experience as a principal investigator
  • Valid driver’s license

 Ideal Skills and Qualifications

  • 7 to 10 years of experience working in the Southeast (i.e., Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, Alabama, and/or Tennessee)
  • Familiarity working with FHWA NEPA compliance and various state DOTs, especially GDOT and FDOT
  • Familiarity with NEPA, ARPA, NHPA, NAGPRA, and other state environmental compliance laws including GEPA
  • Working knowledge of Section 106 of the NRHP and its application in evaluating archaeological resources and cemeteries
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, ArcGIS, and the ESRI suite of software
  • Ability to travel to a location, walk/hike and conduct fieldwork for long hours, sometimes in inclement weather, rugged terrain, and ability to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds is required
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Team oriented with strong capability to work independently
  • Motivated to lead and mentor others
