The Germanna Foundation is now accepting applications for an Assistant Site Director. This is a 15-week position supervising Interns, Field School students and volunteers in conducting a shovel test survey and limited test excavations on the historic property known as Salubria, in Culpeper County, Virginia.

The successful candidate will assist with administrative duties; supervision of interns, students, and volunteers; record checking; logistics; and educational activities associated with the 6-week Field School (through Virginia Commonwealth University).  There will also be 4 “Open House” public events as part of the field season. A Master’s degree and experience with Historic Sites of the Middle Atlantic Region are preferred (candidate should be able to meet Sec. of the Interior’s minimum standards for running a field project).

Located in Stevensburg, VA (just 7 miles west of the Ft. Germanna Visitor Center), Salubria is the oldest brick structure standing in Culpeper County. Listed on the National Register, the house was built as the home of Reverend John Thompson and his wife Butler Brayne (widow of Alexander Spotswood) in 1757. The house is a unique Georgian structure that was continuously occupied through the early 20th century (including the years of the Civil War). Today, the house stands on a 19-acre lot that has seen limited archaeological testing, but no systematic survey.

The position begins the week of May 13 with 15 weeks of work available. The formal field season runs from May 20 to August 9, 2018 and the Assistant is expected to be there for this period (additional time before and after the season can be more flexible).  We work 40 hours a week, typically Monday through Friday.  Fieldwork takes place outdoors, in the full sun. Candidates should be able to lift 40 lbs.  Per Diem, housing and meals are NOT included.

Applications will be accepted until positions are filled – typically by the beginning of March 2019. Interested candidates should e-mail a resume and references to Dr. Eric Larsen, Director of Archaeology, at elarsen@germanna.org.
