Tribal Archaeologist - San Manuel Band of Mission Indians, Highland, CA

Under the direction of the Director of Cultural Resources Management (CRM), the Tribal Archaeologist will assist in the organization and execution of a comprehensive heritage stewardship program that seeks to facilitate the culturally-appropriate management of Serrano cultural resources and landscapes and expand tribal sovereignty via the furtherance of successful consultation efforts with various Federal, state, and local agencies and organizations. The incumbent will create and implement a robust tribal archaeology program as a complement to the mission of the CRM Department—a program that will necessarily need to apply the best of archaeological science while at the same time giving preeminence to the Tribe’s vision, mission, values, and cultural resources treatment preferences and protocols. The creation and implementation of such a program will require the incumbent to plan, track, and undertake or oversee the conduct of all field-based archaeological investigations and monitoring to occur across Serrano territory. The position will also require the creation of various technical documents and correspondence in response to project-based scoping inquires and requests for tribal consultation. The Tribal Archaeologist is responsible for developing a tribal register of historic places, listing sites on the appropriate state registers, nominating resources for listing in the National Register of Historic Places, and conducting damage assessments. The Tribal Archaeologist shall also build capacity within the tribal community regarding heritage stewardship, bolster monitor recruitment and create new field-based training and educational opportunities for both internal and external customers.
