Archaeology Lead (Tahoe National Forest)

The Great Basin Institute, in cooperation with the National Forest Foundation and Tahoe National Forest, is recruiting an Archaeology Lead to support surveys of cultural resources on the forest. The Archaeology Lead will be responsible for coordinating with USFS staff and GBI personnel to conduct Section 106 surveys and to document, assess and characterize the status of new and existing cultural resources, prepare State of California site records, create GIS maps, input data into the Forest Service heritage database, and assist in associated reporting. Project sites within the Sierraville and Truckee Ranger Districts will be targeted. Field data, collected in accordance with USFS protocols, will be used as a basis for recommending management actions. Opportunities to assist in other cultural resource management projects may also be available including on adjacent districts within the Tahoe National Forest. The Archaeology Lead, will be in charge of a three-person crew (lead plus two GBI technicians), and will support field safety, communication, planning, logistics, quality assurance, field implementation, and reporting.

Vegetation management, including fuels reduction, projects requiring Section 106 compliance will be the priority on both districts. Common resources found in the area include logging and railroad camps with associated artifacts and landscape features and pre-contact sites ranging in age and function. Selected candidate will be based out of Sierraville Ranger District but will conduct survey on both districts.

The work is physically demanding and involves hiking in steep terrain at high altitudes (6,000 to 9000 ft.) on a daily basis, commonly during extreme or inclement weather conditions such as snow or rain or high wind events.   Candidate will need to bring their own gear for such conditions.  The position will require working in remote locations on National Forest land, and some camping may be required to accomplish project goals. Work schedules, generally 4 days on and 3 days off each week, are subject to change depending on weather and project needs. This is principally a field-based position (80% of time).

 

 Compensation:  

  • $19.50/hour
  • Health insurance coverage is provided.
  • Government housing is available.  Costs, ranging from $6.00 per day to $11.29 per day, will be deducted.

Location:

The Tahoe National Forest is located in the north central Sierra Nevada Range between Lake Tahoe and the Sacramento Valley. The land rises from an elevation of 1,500 feet in the Sierra foothills on the west, to 9,400 feet along the rugged ridges of the Sierra Crest. Interstate 80 and Highway 49 crisscross the Forest and offer year-round access. The Sierraville Ranger District is located on the edge of Sierra Valley, approximately 30 minutes north of Truckee. Truckee Ranger District is based in the historic town of Truckee, CA. Opportunities for recreation abound in this region.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Archaeology or related discipline, and one year (minimum) of relevant experience; those with experience leading a crew in the field and an advanced degree are encouraged to apply;
  • Experience in performing field work in remote settings while maintaining safety and applying methodological protocols for collecting field data;
  • Experience in standard field methods for archaeological surveys, assessment and characterization of cultural resources, and associated reporting;
  • Familiarity with NHPA and SHPO compliance;
  • Familiarity with and interest in cultural resource management issues of western states and the cultural history of the Sierra Nevada region is preferred;
  • Familiarity with Sierra Nevada forested habitat types, especially east slope, preferred;
  • Proficiency in navigating off trail using GPS and/or topographic map and compass.  Experience with ArcPad on Trimble is preferred;
  •    Experience in data management and quality control, including use of specialized software such as MS Access, ArcMap GIS, and Google Earth;
  • Willingness and ability to work safely and productively in remote field settings under adverse conditions;
  •  Experience in field leadership, including awareness and enactment of best practices for field safety, ensuring fidelity to methods, and supporting quality of outcomes
  • Willingness and ability to occasionally camp for consecutive nights in remote, primitive sites;
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to work cooperatively as well as independently;
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both written and orally, with a diverse audience;
  • Willingness to work a variable schedule or location in response to project needs,;
  • Ability to work effectively in a team setting with USFS staff, GBI staff, interns, volunteers, academic, state, and federal partners;
  • Driver’s license and clean driving record;
  •  Experience in the safe operation of 4WD vehicles on unimproved roads; and
  •  Willingness and ability to consistently enact high performance standards and a strong work and team ethic in support of the mission of GBI and the goals of the USFS.
