Job Description

Arcadis is seeking an Archaeologist to join our growing Environment Business Line in the Midwest U.S.

This is an exciting growth opportunity for an experienced geologist to join a growing team in one of the best-qualified consulting firms in the country. The Archaeologist will support environmental investigation and remediation projects and will work alongside and support senior-level managers on multiple projects.  

Position requirements include, but are not limited to:

  • Conduct archaeological fieldwork for multiple projects and at all levels of investigation (Phases I-III).  
  • Manage archaeological field staff and archaeological field crews.
  • Serve as a Field Director/Staff Archaeologist for the Great Lakes and Midwest Region.
  • Assist/lead for field assessments related to archaeological projects, when required. 
  • Perform physically demanding tasks in adverse environmental conditions (e.g., rugged and unfamiliar terrain, remote locations, hot and cold temperatures). 
  • The ability to travel to different project locations.
  • The ability to walk and conduct fieldwork for long hours, as well as, carry supplies weighing up to 40 pounds.
  • Conduct shovel testing, pedestrian survey, and site documentation.
  • Prepare technical analyses and documents.
  • Assist other environmental groups with fieldwork, on occasion (e.g. wetland delineation, site remediation).
This position requires a mixture of office activities and fieldwork.  The successful candidate must be willing to travel up to 50% of the time.  

The successful candidate will have:
  • Demonstrated experience supervising archaeological field crews
  • Demonstrated experience conducting archaeological fieldwork
  • Working knowledge of GPS systems 
  • Strong technical writing and communications skills
  • Ability to work with a team including internal staff and external clients
  • Basic knowledge of cultural resources management and Section 106

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in archaeology or a related field
  • 2-5 years of experience in cultural resources management
  • This position requires a current valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in geographic information system (GIS) mapping, geoarchaeology, or geophysical survey
  • Fieldwork experience in Midwest or Southeast U.S.
