Archaeological Field Technician Needed- Houston, Texas

JMT's Cultural Resources Team is seeking a part-time Archaeological Field Technician to assist with upcoming archaeological investigations. This is a contract position to be based out of our Houston, Texas office. The work will consist of archaeological fieldwork with the possibility of additional laboratory work to follow. A bachelor’s degree in anthropology or a related field and prior experience in all phases of archaeological investigation are required. Preference will be given to local candidates with experience in Texas. Successful applicants will be considered for anticipated long-term projects in the region. Lodging (individual hotel room) and per diem will be provided as needed. Rate based on experience, and number of hours per week will be based on project workload.

The qualified candidate for this position will assist JMT Project and Senior Archaeologists during field work in Texas. Projects include Phase I archaeological survey, which will involve the hand-excavation of Shovel Test Pits (STPs) and screened through 1/4 inch mesh screens and pedestrian walk-over inspection. The candidate will aid in identifying any pre-contact or historic artifacts encountered during the STPs or on the surface. Preference will be given to candidates that will be available as on-call employees for the late Spring and Summer with the potential for continuous work based on available contracts.

Required Skills
  • Candidates must be able to perform physically demanding tasks in adverse environmental conditions (e.g., rugged terrain, remote locations, hot and cold temperatures).
  • Candidates should also have good organizational skills, communication skills, strong work ethic, and willingness to learn new tasks.
Required Experience
  • Qualified candidates should possess, at minimum, a bachelor's degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a related field and have completed an accredited archaeological field school.
  • Experience with GPS/Trimble navigation and data collection preferred
  • Experience in CRM-based archaeological survey and/or excavation preferred
  • Knowledge of Texas history and prehistory preferred
  • Knowledge of historic/prehistoric material culture and artifact processing preferred
  • Ability to navigate using compass and USGS topographic map preferred
  • Ability to develop site maps and excavation drawings preferred

Working Conditions

Work is performed in the field 95% of the time. Ability to extensively perform bending, kneeling, standing, shoveling, and lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 25 lbs as needed. Work may be conducted outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions.

Work is performed within a general office environment 5% of the time. Office work is generally sedentary in nature, but may require occasional standing and walking. Lighting and temperature are adequate and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. within the office environment.
