Two Archaeological Technicians - Fairfax, Virginia


The Archaeology and Collections Branch of the Fairfax County Park Authority (FCPA) seeks two field technicians to assist with archaeological investigations.  Duties consist primarily of field work including excavation and documentation under the direction of a crew chief or field director.  In the event of inclement weather, the field techs will be assigned lab duties under the direction of a lab director or assistant lab director.  The FCPA archaeological program is public, engaging the interested public and working with volunteers and interns with a range of experience.  Successful completion of an archaeological field school is required.  A BA in Archaeology, Anthropology, History or related field is strongly preferred as is prior archaeological experience in the Middle Atlantic region.  Likewise preference will be given to applicants with experience in ArcGIS, AutoCAD, and/or MS Access.  


The first position is limited to 1560 working hours, or approximately nine months, per calendar year.  Funding for this position is assured through June 2020.  This position is not eligible for paid holidays, paid vacation, or retirement.  Funding for relocation is not available.  A range of medical benefits are available for purchase through Fairfax County at a reasonable price.  The other position is limited to 900 hours, effectively the duration of the summer, and would be a good opportunity for an undergraduate or graduate student seeking field experience.  This position is not eligible for medical insurance benefits,  paid holidays, paid vacation, or retirement.  Funding for relocation is not available.  Compensation for both positions ranges between $13.50 – 14.50/hr depending on skills and experience.  All work is local; no per diem is available.  In general, the work schedule is Tuesday through Saturday.
