Title:  On-Call Archaeological Technician and On-Call Paleontological Technician

Salary: Wage Commensurate with Experience

Location: Los Angeles County, CA. Project is in the Sylmar Area.

Red Tail Environmental is a Native American owned firm providing cultural resources and paleontological services across Southern California.  

We have an immediate need for On-Call Archaeological and Paleontological Field Technicians for construction monitoring work in Los Angeles County, CA, within the Sylmar Area. 

An A.A., B.A., or B.S. in Anthropology, Geology, Paleontology or a closely related field, an archaeological or paleontological field school, and experience in Southern California is preferred. Monitors must have a valid CA Driver’s License in good standing, access to reliable transportation, ability to work in extreme climatic conditions, in cold or hot weather, and ability to carry 30 lbs. over rough terrain during the course of an 8-hour work day. Cross trained monitors in archaeology and paleontology are highly encouraged to apply.

The Archaeological Field Technician must possess basic archaeological field skills, including:

Ability to identify local cultural materials in the field 

Ability to take comprehensive notes and fill out archaeological forms

Ability to read topographic and project maps

Ability to perform archaeological surveys and excavations

Ability to communicate with construction contractors, Native American monitors, and archaeological supervisors during monitoring jobs

The Paleontological Field Technician must possess basic paleontological field skills, including:

Experience identifying and analyzing a wide variety of vertebrate, invertebrate, plant and trace paleontological remains in the field

Ability to take comprehensive notes and fill out paleontological forms

Knowledge of paleontological monitoring, mitigation, and salvage principles and standards preferred

Field experience should include jacketing and recovering fossils, fossil locality and geologic data recovery, and stratigraphic measurement

Ability to communicate with construction contractors and paleontological supervisors during monitoring jobs
