Part-Time Archaeological Field Technician Needed- Raleigh, NC

Johnson, Mirmiran & Thompson (JMT) is seeking part-time Archaeological Field Technicians to assist with upcoming archaeological investigations. This is a contract position to be based out of our Raleigh, North Carolina office. The work will consist of archaeological fieldwork with the possibility of additional laboratory work to follow. A bachelor’s degree in anthropology or a related field and prior experience in all phases of archaeological investigation are required. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in the Carolinas and Virginia. Successful applicants will be considered for anticipated long-term and short-term projects in the region. Lodging (individual hotel room) and per diem will be provided. Rate based on experience, and number of hours per week will be based on project workload.

The qualified candidate for this position will assist JMT Project and Senior Archaeologists during field work in Virginia, North Carolina, and/or South Carolina. Additional work beyond the coastal southeast is also possible. Projects include Phase I archaeological survey, which will involve the hand-excavation of Shovel Test Pits (STPs) and screened through 1/4 inch mesh screens. Additional work, involving controlled test unit excavation, is anticipated. The candidate will aid in identifying any pre-contact or historic artifacts encountered during the STPs or test unit excavation. Preference will be given to candidates that will be available to travel for projects during the fall with the potential for continuous work based on available contracts – both local and out-of-town work is anticipated. Work will begin immediately.

Required Skills
  • Candidates must be able to perform physically demanding tasks in adverse environmental conditions (e.g., rugged terrain, remote locations, hot and cold temperatures).
  • Candidates should also have good organizational skills, communication skills, strong work ethic, and willingness to learn new tasks.
Required Experience

Qualified candidates should possess, at minimum, a bachelor's degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a related field and have completed an accredited archaeological field school.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience with GPS/Trimble navigation and data collection
  • Experience in CRM-based archaeological survey and/or excavation
  • Knowledge of Southeastern and/or mid-Atlantic history and prehistory
  • Knowledge of historic/prehistoric material culture and artifact processing
  • Ability to navigate using compass and USGS topographic map
  • Ability to develop site maps and excavation drawings

Working Conditions

Work is performed in the field 95% of the time. Ability to extensively perform bending, kneeling, standing, shoveling, hammering, chopping and lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 25 lbs as needed. Work may be conducted outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions.

Work is performed within a general office environment 5% of the time. Office work is generally sedentary in nature, but may require occasional standing and walking. Lighting and temperature are adequate and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. within the office environment.
