Job Description 

This is a permanent, full time position developing and overseeing archaeological projects at a senior level as a Senior Archaeological Principal Investigator (PI). The successful applicant will work alongside our existing staff of PIs, Project Archaeologists (PA), and historians in serving a variety of federal, state, municipal, and private clients. Job responsibilities include the ability to plan, implement, conduct, report, and complete archaeological research including field investigations, laboratory analyses, and synthesis of data to assist in the determination of resource significance for project planning for various state and federal regulatory compliance and private due diligence investigations. This individual will be expected to interact with a variety of clients, agency staff, professional colleagues, and fellow workers. The Senior PI will direct and manage multiple projects simultaneously, while directly and indirectly supervising multiple teams of archaeologists and historians. The PI will be responsible for ensuring scientific quality of projects, ensuring compliance with applicable statutes and regulations, and for maintaining schedules and budgets. 

Minimum Qualifications 

Candidates must have an advanced degree in anthropology, archaeology, or a closely related field and 10 or more years of professional archaeological experience including at least 3 years as a PI. Candidates must also demonstrate a substantial publishing/reporting record, excellent oral and written communication skills, and a thorough working knowledge of federal and state laws, as well as regulations and guidelines pertaining to cultural resources. Knowledge of and experience with current technologies of electronic data collection, analysis, reduction, display, and reporting are essential. The ability to develop and maintain business relationships is required. The successful candidate must be willing to work from AmaTerra’s Austin, Texas office and assume a roughly 20 percent travel commitment. The ideal candidate will be in good standing with the Texas Historical Commission (THC) with no outstanding or defaulted antiquities permits

 

Preferred Qualifications

Significant experience in Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and/or Arkansas is preferred; experience in other locations, including existing client contacts, is advantageous. Experience working with/for federal agencies is desirable. Specific research interests and/or technical skills such as remote sensing, faunal analysis, lithic technology, the historic period, or geomorphology are welcome.
