Archaeology Crew Member - Tahoe National Forest


The Great Basin Institute AmeriCorps Environmental Service Program, in cooperation with the Tahoe National Forest, is recruiting an Archaeology Crew Member to support surveys of cultural resources on the forest. The Archaeology Crew Member will be responsible for coordinating with USFS staff and GBI personnel to conduct Section 106 surveys and to document, assess and characterize the status of new and existing cultural resources, prepare State of California site records, create GIS maps, input data into the Forest Service heritage database, and assist in associated reportingVegetation management projects, including fuels reduction, requiring Section 106 compliance will be the priority on both districts. Common resources found in the area include logging and railroad camps with associated artifacts and landscape features and pre-contact sites ranging in age and function.

Project sites within the Sierraville and Truckee Ranger Districts will be targeted. The selected candidate will be based out of the Sierraville Ranger District office and will conduct survey on both districts. Field data, collected in accordance with USFS protocols, will be used as a basis for recommending management actions. Opportunities to assist in other cultural resource management projects may also be available including on adjacent districts within the Tahoe National Forest. The archaeology technician will be part of a one-person crew (lead plus one GBI technician.

Please note that the work is physically demanding and involves hiking in steep terrain at high altitudes (6,000-9000 ft.) on a daily basis, commonly during extreme or inclement weather conditions such as snow or rain or high wind events.   The candidate will need to bring their own gear for such conditions.  The position will require working in remote locations on National Forest land. The work schedule, generally 4 days on and 3 days off each week, is subject to change depending on weather and project needs. This is principally a field-based position (80% of time).


  • Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology/Archaeology or related discipline, and relevant experience;
  • Experience in performing field work in remote settings while maintaining safety and applying methodological protocols for collecting field data;
  • Experience in standard field methods for archaeological surveys, assessment and characterization of cultural resources, and associated reporting;
  • Familiarity with NHPA and SHPO compliance;
  • Familiarity with and interest in cultural resource management issues of western states and the cultural history of the Sierra Nevada region;
  • Familiarity with Sierra Nevada forested habitat types, especially east slope, preferred;
  • Proficiency in navigating off trail using GPS and/or topographic map and compass;
  • Experience in use of specialized software such as MS Access, ArcMap GIS, and Google Earth, preferred;
  • Willingness and ability to work safely and productively in remote field settings under adverse conditions;
  • Willingness and ability to occasionally camp for consecutive nights in remote, primitive sites;
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to work cooperatively as well as independently;

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both written and orally, with a diverse audience;
  • Willingness to work a variable schedule in response to project needs,
  • Ability to work effectively in a team setting with USFS staff, GBI staff, interns, volunteers, academic, state, and federal partners;
  • Driver’s license and clean driving record;
  • Experience in the safe operation of 4WD vehicles on unimproved roads;
  • Willingness and ability to consistently enact high performance standards and a strong work and team ethic in support of the mission of GBI and the goals of the USFS; and
  • Meet AmeriCorps eligibility requirements: (1) U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status, (2) eligible to receive an AmeriCorps Education Award (limit of four in a lifetime or the equivalent of two full-time education awards), (3) pass National Sex Offender Public Website (NSOPW) and federal criminal background checks, (4) adhere to the rules, regulations and code of conduct as specified in the Member Service Agreement; and (5) will not engage in any prohibited activities as listed in the Member Service Agreement.
