Archaeological Field Director – Colorado

We are seeking applicants who are proficient in fieldwork and reporting, with extensive project experience throughout Colorado (Front Range, Mountains, and Southwest) the Northern Plains, and the Rocky Mountain West. Successful applicants will meet the Secretary of the Interior’s professional qualification standards and will have or be able to obtain current permits with a variety of public land managing agencies (e.g., BLM and USFS).

Duties and responsibilities include organizing and mobilizing field crews for projects across the state and in neighboring areas, including managing schedules, preparation of equipment and data for fieldwork, processing of fieldwork data (including site, isolate, and GIS data), and collaborating with the reporting team. Many projects are conducted as camping surveys in remote areas on the Western Slope of Colorado; therefore, demonstrated skills and experience in camping and hiking in adverse condition is preferred. The position requires working in the office and in the field, both alone and with a team, as needed. Also required are excellent writing skills, familiarity with Colorado and other states cultural resources forms, and expertise supervising all aspects of archaeological survey, site recording and evaluations, and testing and data recovery. The ideal candidate will have a strong background of teamwork and experience leading diverse crews.

Requirements include:

       Must meet the CO BLM crew chief standards for all districts (see pages 13 – 15 in

       5+ years of archaeological consulting or agency experience, with demonstrated success as a field director or crew chief

       Excellent writing skills and experience with writing technical reports and Colorado cultural resources form

       Proficient in electronic data collection, including use of Trimble units (TDC100s and Collector preferred), Garmin GPX, database systems, iPads, and various software types

       Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a clear ability to support crews in various inclement conditions, often on camping projects

The ideal candidate will possess the following skills:

       Good organizational skills

       Ability to manage schedules and budgets

       Track record of successfully supervising archaeological inventories in remote locations (possibly involving camping)

       Knowledge of federal cultural resources regulations

       Experience coordinating and communicating with agencies and clients

       Willingness to modify strategies to optimize efficiency in the field and at the office

       Excellent ability to work in a team setting
