Principal Investigator/Project Manager Arizona


Cogstone Resource Management Inc. is taking applications for a Principal Investigator/Project Manager in our Arizona office. The successful applicant will be responsible for the management and implementation of Cultural Resources projects as assigned. Duties include field work, writing technical reports and compliance documents, material analysis, and budget and proposal preparation. Applicant must be able to travel overnight. Expertise with regulatory agencies, compliance with federal, state, local and agency laws, ordinances, regulations and statutes regarding cultural resources is necessary.


  • Graduate degree in archaeology, anthropology, or another related discipline (including but not limited to art history, classics, history, or museum studies), or equivalent experience.
  • Completed a report, thesis or dissertation, or its equivalent that addresses a substantive archaeological question.
  • 5 years professional experience
  • Registered Professional Archaeologist (RPA).
  • Meet the Secretary of Interiors Standards and Guidelines as defined in Code of Federal Regulations, 36 CFR Part 61.
  • Meet the requirements of the California Historical Resources Information System's Professional Qualifications for Principal Investigator is a plus.
  • Have professional experience with cultural surveys, protocol surveys, cultural resources management and conservation expertise along the Southwest border regions. Experience in other regions is valued and will also be taken into consideration.
  • Competency with a Trimble GPS unit.
  • Fully qualified to conduct all types of field studies, including survey, reconnaissance, monitoring, salvage, testing, and excavation.
  • Ability to pass a low-level federal background check.
  • Valid driver’s license, good driving record, reliable vehicle.

Supervisory Responsibility

Provides direction and oversight of work performed for assigned projects.

Work Environment

This job may operate at high altitude, in excessive heat or cold, in excessive humidity or dampness, with excessive continuous noise, on slippery and uneven walking surfaces, working around machinery with moving parts, working around moving objects or vehicles, working in close proximity to others, protracted or irregular hours of work.

Physical Demands

Ability to travel and conduct fieldwork for long hours (sometimes in inclement weather, rugged terrain, and at high altitudes) and to carry equipment weighing up to 40 pounds. Moderate light lifting (30 lbs) with occasional lifting of up to 50 lbs., repetitive motion of upper body and limbs, reaching above shoulders, use of fingers (dexterity and normal sensation required, use of both hands required), extensive walking over rough terrain, standing in limited spaces for extended periods, use of both legs, depth perception, ability to detect odors, clear vision and speech, ability to hear clearly.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

Some weeks may entail part-time hours, while other weeks may entail full-time hours. Due to the variable project time frames, this position will be assigned hours as projects require.


A minimal amount of overnight travel is expected for this position. Travel to and from project sites is required.
